Airway distensibility by HRCT in asthmatics and COPD with comparable airway obstruction.

Introduction: Decreased airway distensibility (AD) in response to deep inspirations, as assessed by HRCT, has been associated with the severity of asthma and COPD. Aims: The current study was designed to compare the magnitude of AD by HRCT in individuals with asthma and COPD with comparable degrees of bronchial obstruction, and to explore factors that may influence it. Results: We enrolled a total of 12 asthmatics (M/F:7/5) and 8 COPD (7/1) with comparable degree of bronchial obstruction (FEV1% predicted mean±SEM: 69.1 ± 5.2% and 61.2 ± 5.0%, respectively; p = 0.31). Effect of unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis on postpneumonectomy lung growth.

Respiratory muscle-associated stretch has been implicated in normal lung development (fetal breathing movements) and postpneumonectomy lung growth. To test the hypothesis that mechanical stretch from diaphragmatic contraction contributes to lung growth, we performed left phrenic nerve transections (PNT) in mice with and without ipsilateral pneumonectomy. PNT was demonstrated by asymmetric costal margin excursion and confirmed at autopsy. In mice with two lungs, PNT was associated with a decrease in ipsilateral lung volume ( P < 0.05) and lung weight ( P < 0.05). Objective: To determine the agreement between devices and repeatability within devices of the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory flow at 50% of FVC (FEF50) values measured using the four spirometers included in the study. The effect of tiotropium/olodaterol versus fluticasone propionate/salmeterol on left ventricular filling and lung hyperinflation in patients with COPD

This exploratory, randomised, double-blind, double-dummy, multicentre, cross-over study explored the effect of 6 weeks of treatment with tiotropium/olodaterol (T/O) versus fluticasone propionate/salmeterol (F/S) on left ventricular filling in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with functional residual capacity (FRC) >120% predicted and postbronchodilator improvement of FRC ≥7.5%. Overall, 76 patients were randomised across nine sites. Treatment with T/O or F/S increased left ventricular end-diastolic volume index from baseline (adjusted mean change: T/O: 2.317 mL/m2, F/S: 2.855 mL/m2), with no statistically significant difference between treatments. Mechanostructural adaptations preceding postpneumonectomy lung growth

In many species, pneumonectomy results in compensatory growth in the remaining lung. Although the late mechanical consequences of murine pneumonectomy are known, little is known about the anatomic adaptations and respiratory mechanics during compensatory lung growth. To investigate the structural and mechanical changes during compensatory growth, mice were studied for 21 days after left pneumonectomy using microCT and respiratory system impedance (FlexiVent). Anatomic changes after left pneumonectomy included minimal mediastinal shift or chestwall remodeling, but significant displacement of the heart and cardiac lobe. Dynamic determination of oxygenation and lung compliance in murine pneumonectomy.

Thoracic surgical procedures in mice have been applied to a wide range of investigations, but little is known about the murine physiologic response to pulmonary surgery. Using continuous arterial oximetry monitoring and the FlexiVent murine ventilator, the authors investigated the effect of anesthesia and pneumonectomy on mouse oxygen saturation and lung mechanics. Sedation resulted in a dose-dependent decline of oxygen saturation that ranged from 55% to 82%. Oxygen saturation was restored by mechanical ventilation with increased rate and tidal volumes. Extended pseudo-fermions from non commutative bosons

We consider some modifications of the two dimensional canonical commutation relations, leading to {\em non commutative bosons} and we show how biorthogonal bases of the Hilbert space of the system can be obtained out of them. Our construction extends those recently introduced by one of us (FB), modifying the canonical anticommutation relations. We also briefly discuss how bicoherent states, producing a resolution of the identity, can be defined.

Random variables representing measurements, broadly understood to include any responses to any inputs, form a system in which each of them is uniquely identified by its content (that which it measures) and its context (the conditions under which it is recorded). Two random variables are jointly distributed if and only if they share a context. Feynman-Kac formulae

In this chapter, we establish the connection between the deterministic EIT forward problem and the class of reflecting diffusion processes. We proceed along the lines of the recent paper [137] by Piiroinen and the author: We derive Feynman-Kac formulae in terms of these processes for the solutions to the forward problems corresponding to the continuum model and the complete electrode model, respectively. These results extend the classical Feynman-Kac formulae for elliptic boundary value problems in smooth domains and with smooth coefficients which were obtained in the 1980s and 1990s using the Feller semigroup approach and Ito stochastic calculus.
