On the calibration of reactive energy meters under non sinusoidal conditions
2009
This paper is focused on the problems related to the calibration of the reactive energy meters on the place of installation of the electricity meter (on-site), using the load of the same electrical system. In the presence of harmonic distortion, the behaviour of the meters can go out of the limits imposed by the theoretical calibration curve depending on the metric used by both reference standard meters and meters under test.

Development of an individualized familiarization method for vertical jumps
2013
The Contribution of Electrical Resistivity Measurements to the Analysis of Landslide Events
2005
In order to gain insight into the study of natural avalanches dynamics, we illustrate a statistical model based on a dissipative dynamical variable associated to a position dependent factor of safety field. This model, as experimentally demonstrated, is able to reproduce the complex structure of landslide events, such as power-law distributions. In this paper, we introduce an explicit dependence of the safety factor on the electrical resistivity to simulate landslide events in pyroclastic soils. An application of the model to data acquired in a test area characterized by flowslide events (Monte Albino, Campania Region - South Italy) bear witness the relevant role played by the resistivity m…
Reliability of liver stiffness measurement in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: the effects of body mass index.
2011
Background Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) using transient elastography (TE) is used to stage fibrosis in patients with liver disease, diagnostic reliability and the factors affecting its performance in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are incompletely understood. Aim To assess LSM. Methods Consecutive NAFLD patients (n = 169), assessed by liver biopsy (Kleiner score), anthropometrical, biochemical and metabolic features, underwent LSM using TE with standard M probe. Results Liver stiffness measurement was not reliable in 23 patients (14%) due to obesity. Among patients with a reliable TE, a LSM value >7.25 kPa was the best cut-off for predicting significant fibrosi…
A comparison between the single ring pressure infiltrometer and simplified falling head techniques
2013
Testing the relative performances of the single ring pressure infiltrometer (PI) and simplified falling head (SFH) techniques to determine the field saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, at the near point scale may help to better establish the usability of these techniques for interpreting and simulating hydrological processes. A sampling of 10 Sicilian sites showed that the measured Kfs was generally higher with the SFH technique than the PI one, with statistically significant differences by a factor varying from 3 to 192, depending on the site. A short experiment with the SFH technique yielded higher Kfs values because a longer experiment with the PI probably promoted short-term swe…
Fission yield studies with SPIG-equipped IGISOL : a novel method for nuclear data measurements
2010
This thesis work consists of two sections. In the first section, the development of a so-called Laser Ion Source Trap (LIST) device is described. The LIST device is based on a double SPIG (SextuPole Ion Guide) system, providing the possibility to improve the elemental selectivity of the IGISOL method via highly discriminative laser ionization occurring outside the ion guide. The improved selectivity enables the production of isotopically pure beams. The double SPIG can be used without laser ionization and replaces the conventional skimmer electrode. In this work, the SPIG is compared to the skimmer and is shown to remarkably improve both the efficiency and beam quality of the IGISOL facilit…

Testing flow resistance equation for rill flow
2018
At first, in this paper a flow resistance equation for rill flow, deduced applying dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory, is presented. The incomplete self-similarity hypothesis is used for establishing the flow velocity distribution whose integration gives the theoretical expression of the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor. Then the deduced theoretical resistance equation, which is calibrated by some measurements of flow velocity, water depth, cross section area, wetted perimeter and bed slope carried out in 106 reaches of some rills modelled on an experimental plot, is tested using the literature data by Abrahams et al. (1996), Strohmeier et al. (2014) and Peng et al. (2015) for ri…
Physical properties of aerosol particles measured from a bubbling fluidized bed boiler
2015
Abstract Increased use of biomass and waste fuels, and the consequent corrosion problem have led to an increased need to study and monitor the combustion processes. This study presents an extensive physical characterization of aerosol particles measured from a bubbling fluidized bed boiler with different fuel mixtures and optional ferric sulfate feeding. The fuel mixtures included bark, sludge, peat and solid recovered fuel. Previously, the characterization of the particles analyzed from a fluidized bed reactor has mainly focused on chemical off-line analysis of collected impactor samples, large coarse mode particles or laboratory-scale reactors. In this study, the focus is in the particle …
