Novel Instrument for Temperature Measurements in Borehole Heat Exchangers
2019
The thermal response test (TRT) is the standard method for characterizing the thermal properties of the ground and those of a borehole heat exchanger (BHE). During the TRT, the inlet and outlet temperatures of the BHE are monitored. However, this test typically considers the ground as a homogeneous, isotropic, and infinite media, and therefore, it only determines the bulk and effective parameters, such as effective thermal conductivity and thermal borehole resistance. Hence, the enhanced TRT protocols are necessary where the depth-dependent temperatures are measured to estimate depth-specific thermal properties. Thus, a novel instrument with a data logger to automatically obtain the tempera…
Experiments for testing soil texture effects on flow resistance in mobile bed rills
2018
Abstract In this paper a recently theoretically deduced rill flow resistance equation, based on a power-velocity profile, was tested experimentally on plots of varying slopes and soil texture in which mobile bed rills are incised. Measurements of flow velocity, water depth, cross section area, wetted perimeter and bed slope conducted in rill reaches incised on experimental plots, having different slope values (9, 14, 22, 24 and 26%) and soil texture (clay fraction ranging from 42 to 73%), and literature data were used to calibrate the flow resistance equation. In particular, the relationship between the velocity profile parameter Γ, the channel slope, the flow Froude number and texture frac…
Soil Erosion on Mountain Trails in Eastern Iberian Peninsula
2020
A review on trial erosion shows that soil erosion rates are one to three orders of magnitude higher than the ones recommended as sustainable. This is threatening the sustainable managements of mountain terrains, mainly in the popular hiking paths. The warm temperatures characterize Eastern Spain in winter, which results in visitors from northern Europe to walk in the coastal land mountainous terrain. This increases the pressure to the currently highly visited most popular paths. We selected representative transects of the trails of Serra de Bérnia, Puigcampana, Penyagolosa, Montcabré, Serra del Sit, Aitana, Les Tres Creus, Caroig, Cupurutxo and Circ de la Safor. All the selected study sites…
An automatic approach for rill network extraction to measure rill erosion by terrestrial and low‐cost unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry
2019
For an erosion event (October 2016) occurred at the Sparacia experimental area (Southern Italy), both terrestrial and low-altitude aerial surveys were carried out by consumer grade camera and quadcopter (low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV]) to measure rill erosion on two plots with steepness of 22% and 26%. Applying the structure from motion (SfM) technique, the three-dimensional digital terrain models (3D-DTMs) and the quasi three-dimensional models (2.5D-digital elevation model [DEM]) were obtained by the two surveys. Furthermore, 3D-DTM and DEM were built using the available aerial photographs (166) and adding 40 terrestrial photographs. For the first time, the convergence index was a…
Gestalt/Gestalt Theory
2020
Gestalt is a concept introduced to solve the problems of unity, connection and order that objects manifest in experience. Philosophers trained at Franz Brentano’s teaching began to work on it to address epistemological and ontological questions about perception, cognition and the structure of objects. This work was seminal for Gestalt psychology, from the research of the Graz and Berlin Schools, carried on by Cesare Musatti, Fabio Metelli, Gaetano Kanizsa, Paolo Bozzi in Padua and Trieste, Albert Michotte and Paul Fraisse in Louvain, to that of Edgar Rubin and David Katz, but also of Karl Buhler, Egon Brunswik and Ludwig Kardos in Wien. Common is the tenet that the world looks as neither a …
Combining pressure transducer and tipping bucket rain gauge to measure high variable runoff rate collected from a green roof
2018
Urban areas are constantly expanding in terms of space and density. It is known that the effect of urbanization is an increase of the area of impermeable surfaces. The infiltration decreases, the surface runoff increases (Baiamonte, Singh, 2017) and the existing stormwater infrastructure may become no more appropriate to face flooding (Berndtsson, 2010). Berndtsson (2010) described the numerous benefits that can be achieved by turning the roofs green through covering them with soil and vegetation. Green roofs i) reduce and attenuate stormwater runoff, which in turn lowers risks of urban floods and improves the urban water balance thus approaching the natural one (Mentens et al., 2006), ii) …
IEEE Std. 1459 power quantities ratio approaches for simplified harmonic emissions assessment
2018
The paper investigates the suitability of using power ratio parameters for harmonic emissions assessment at the point of common coupling (PCC). The study is carried out starting from the IEEE Std. 1459-2010 apparent power decomposition, where power factors are defined for evaluating line utilization and harmonic pollution levels. In addition, the study investigates the behavior of new parameters, which are expressed in terms of ratio between IEEE Std. 1459-2010 power quantities. The study is carried out for both single-phase and three-phase case, also considering the presence of capacitors. ? 2018 IEEE.
What do we learn from comparing hedonic scores and willingness to pay data? [O8.2]
2010
Hedonic measurements are generally conducted in a blind condition and thus evaluate consumer reactions to the sensory characteristics of the products whereas auctions are generally conducted to determine consumer valuation of extrinsic characteristics. In the last 10 years these two approaches were combined to reveal consumer preferences. Thus, tasting was introduced in the auction procedures. However, only two papers reported a comparison of these two approaches (Lange et al., 2002 with a between-subject design and Noussair et al., 2004 with a within-subject design). The aim of this paper is to present such a comparison on four data sets collected in our laboratory for different food produ…
Alkylthio-tetrasubstituted μ-Nitrido Diiron Phthalocyanines: Spectroelectrochemistry, Electrical Properties, and Heterojunctions for Ammonia Sensing.
2020
Alkylthio-tetrasubstituted μ-nitrido diiron phthalocyanine complexes are synthesized with n-butyl, iso-butyl, tert-butyl, and n-hexadecyl alkyl moieties. For the first time, a spectroelectrochemical investigation of μ-nitrido diiron phthalocyanines is achieved at all the redox steps. The complexes are stable in all their redox states, unlike their unsubstituted analogues. The interest of the present complexes is to prepare sensing devices by a solution processing method. Films are characterized by electronic absorption and Raman spectroscopies. Electrical measurements on resistors show the highly resistive behavior of these complexes, whatever the chain length. However, when combined with t…
Cross‐country data on skills and the quality of schooling: A selective survey
2022
Scores in standardized international student achievement tests and some recent adult literacy studies provide interesting data on the quality of educational outputs and on the skill level of the population that can be a useful complement to the data on the quantity of schooling which have been most commonly used in the growth literature. This paper describes the most recent available primary data on the subject, reviews different attempts to organize, standardize, and summarize them, and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the existing indicators and their potential usefulness as explanatory variables in empirical analyses of the determinants of income and welfare levels and growth ra…
