Enhancing the Readership of Teacher Students With Digital Book Subscription Services
2020
This article aims to illustrate a 7-month trial of digital book subscription services in teacher education. Student teachers of the University of Turku in Finland were encouraged to implement the service as part of their free time reading. The experiences of the digital subscription service were investigated using a questionnaire, and data were analyzed through a combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The aim of the study was to consider the value of digital book subscription services in terms of reading for pleasure and to describe the readership of teacher students as well as their assessment of digital book subscription services as a pedagogical approach for suppo…
Discrete-Time Adaptive Hysteresis Filter for Parallel Computing and Recursive Identification of Preisach Model
2018
High-precision motion control systems, for instance deployed for micro- and nano-positioning, often use the smart-material based actuators such as piezoelectric and magnetostrictive stages. Those exhibit inherent hysteresis nonlinearities which are challenging to compensate without precise hysteresis modeling. Even if a suitable hysteresis modeling approach is available, its parameter identification, correspondingly adaptation, at normal operating conditions constitute an essential task for the overall control design. This paper uses the direct recursive identification method for the Preisach hysteresis model and describes the fast parallel-computing discrete-time algorithm for an adaptive …

Quantum rings for beginners II: Bosons versus fermions
2012
The purpose of this overview article, which can be viewed as a supplement to our previous review on quantum rings, [S. Viefers {\it et al}, Physica E {\bf 21} (2004), 1-35], is to highlight the differences of boson and fermion systems in one-dimensional (1D) and quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) quantum rings. In particular this involves comparing their many-body spectra and other properties, in various regimes and models, including spinless and spinful particles, finite versus infinite interaction, and continuum versus lattice models. Our aim is to present the topic in a comprehensive way, focusing on small systems where the many-body problem can be solved exactly. Mapping out the similarities a…
A Realistic Proposal for the Observation of Zeno Phenomena in the Dynamics of Trapped Ions
2001
A realistic experimental scheme for the observation of a continuous measurement Quantum Zeno Effect in the contest of single trapped ions is proposed. Our method relies on the nonlinearities characterizing the ionic Rabi frequency far from the Lamb-Dicke regime.
Generation of Non-Classical States through QND-like Processes
2007
In the spirit of quantum nondemolition measurement we show that repeatedly measuring the atomic state of a trapped ion subjected to suitable vibronic couplings it is possible to extract interesting nonclassical states. The possibility of generating angular momentum Schrödinger cat is demonstrated.
Ion traps in nuclear physics : recent results and achievements
2016
Ion traps offer a way to determine nuclear binding energies through atomic mass measurements with a high accuracy and they are routinely used to provide isotopically or even isomerically pure beams of short-living ions for post-trap decay spectroscopy experiments. In this review, different ion-trapping techniques and progresses in recent nuclear physics experiments employing low-energy ion traps are discussed. The main focus in this review is on the benefit of recent high accuracy mass measurements to solve some key problems in physics related to nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics as well as neutrinos. Also, several cases of decay spectroscopy experiments utilizing trap-purified ion sa…
