<title>Fiber optic monitoring buses with binary on-off sensors</title>
1999
This paper presents general theoretical considerations of complex-structure optical fiber networks (buses) with binary `on-off' fiber optic sensors and fiber optic transmission lines for monitoring, diagnostic or measurement systems. The principles of fiber optic serial and parallel buses and various types of intensity fiber optic binary sensors are described as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the individual types of networks. The choice of the use of fiber optic technology rather than other techniques is discussed. Special emphasis was put on the role and function of optoelectronic and optical fiber devices in harsh environments. Theoretical considerations are illustrated by th…
Spatial and thermal measurements using thermography CCD during HF soldering of metallic tubes
2002
High frequency soldering allows high production speed, contactless heating and good quality of the weld. The speed limit of soldering is principally imposed by a good drive of the metal in the profiling machine. To control a HF soldering process, the authors propose a new method and approach which consists in controlling the temperature with a thermal image acquisition system developed in their laboratory. Their computer vision, described in this paper, is based on CCD thermography. This technology brings many advantages and tools in the measurement of thermal and spatial parameters. In fact, high spatial (800/spl times/600 pixels) and temporal resolutions, good relative thermal resolution …
A DAQ-based sampling wattmeter for IEEE Std. 1459-2010 powers measurements. Uncertainty evaluation in nonsinusoidal conditions
2015
Abstract This paper presents the evaluation of the metrological performances of a DAQ-based sampling wattmeter (DAQ-SW) for the measurement of IEEE Std. 1459-2010 power quantities in non-sinusoidal conditions. The instrument makes use of two commercial data acquisition (DAQ) boards, a non-inductive current shunt, a personal computer and a commercial software for data processing. Starting from the results of an experimental characterization of the two instrument channels with non-sinusoidal voltages and currents and a correlation analysis, the combined standard uncertainties of IEEE Std. 1459-2010 quantities are evaluated, following the approach of the ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertai…
A simple unsynchronized two‐end algorithm for faults location and identification in electrical distribution systems
2012
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify a new and simple two‐end algorithm for fault location identification and characterization, in electrical distribution systems.Design/methodology/approachThe developed diagnostic algorithm is based on a simple model of the network using a lumped parameters representation.FindingsTest results have proved the approach to be efficient, allowing a precise fault identification and location while not requiring synchronized measures from the two ends.Research limitations/implicationsThere is a need for measurement systems at all MV/LV substations.Practical implicationsApplicability with limited investments is not possible where metering systems are no…
E-Nose Application to Food Industry Production
2016
Food companies worldwide must constantly engage in product development to stay competitive, cover existing markets, explore new markets, and meet key consumer requirements. This ongoing development places high demands on achieving quality at all levels, particularly in terms of food safety, integrity, quality, nutrition, and other health effects. Food product research is required to convert the initial product idea into a formulation for upscaling production with ensured significant results. Sensory evaluation is an effective component of the whole process. It is especially important in the last step in the development of new products to ensure product acceptance. In that stage, measurement…
Towards more equity concerning quality of Urban Waste Management services in the context of cities
2018
Abstract An innovative combined evaluation approach is proposed in the present paper to deal with the issue of the performance measurement and comparison of Urban Waste Management (UWM) services in the context of cities. The ELECTRE III method is initially considered as tool able to execute a multi-criteria analysis aimed at ranking UWM systems based on their integration and sustainability levels. The latter are comprehensively evaluated via the recently developed “Wasteaware” Integrated and Sustainability Waste Management indicators framework, which takes into account physical components and governance aspects of UWM systems. Then, on the basis on ELECTRE III results, a practical gaps inve…
Synergistic Use of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Photoelectrochemical Measurements for Studying Solid State Properties of Anodic HfO2
2017
Within the past years, intense research has been carried out on HfO2 as high k material, promising candidate to replace SiO2 as gate dielectric in CMOS based devices (1), and as metal oxide for resistive random access memory (ReRAM) (2). For both technological applications compact, uniform and flat oxides are necessary, and a detailed understanding of their physical properties as a function of the fabrication conditions is strongly. Hafnia performance can be significantly influenced by carrier trapping taking place at pre-existing precursors states (induced by oxygen vacancies, interstitial ions, impurities acting as dopants), or by self-trapping in a perfect lattice, where the potential we…
Immunity of a Virtual Instrument to conducted electromagnetic disturbances
2004
In the paper the performances of the Virtual Instruments under conducted electromagnetic disturbances are investigated, in order to find out if and how their metrological characteristics change with respect to the ones measured in absence of electromagnetic threats. The analysis is carried out by means of experimental tests, subjecting the AC power port of the systems under test to the conducted disturbances considered by the IEC-61326 standard and following the test procedures prescribed in the IEC-61000-4-series standards. The results show that the tested measurements instruments are sufficiently immune to these disturbances, since no variations of the distinctive parameters have been obs…
ORDINAL MEASUREMENTS WITH INTERVAL CONSTRAINTS IN THE EIA PROCESS FOR SITING A WASTE STORAGE AREA
2009
We describe application of multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedure for siting a waste storage area. The world’s largest biofuel-based combined heat and power (CHP) plant was built in Pietarsaari, Finland. The plant produces certain byproducts, such as flue dust and bottom ash, which need to be processed and stored to prevent releases to the environment. Different storage sites will have different impacts on people, nature, and the economy. Cardinal measurement of the different impacts was considered too costly. Instead, ordinal measurement of all criteria was applied; i.e., experts ranked the alternative storage sites according to each c…
Piezoelectric Rainfall Energy Harvester Performance by an Advanced Arduino-Based Measuring System
2018
This paper presents the performances of rainfall energy harvesting through the use of a piezoelectric transducer and an Arduino-based measuring system. Different studies agree on the possibility of generating electricity from rainfall, but to date, a study on measuring the quantity of energy produced during rainfall is still missing. The present study begins with results obtained from laboratory researchers using piezoelectric transducers and oscilloscopes, finalized to measure the energy produced from a single raindrop, and concludes with an ad hoc Arduino-based measuring system, aimed to measure the actual amount of electrical energy produced by a piezoelectric transducer that is exposed …
