Measurements of the T2K neutrino beam properties using the INGRID on-axis near detector

2012

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. The …

Detecting the upturn of the solar 8B neutrino spectrum with LENA

2014

LENA ( L ow E nergy N eutrino A stronomy) has been proposed as a next generation 50 kt liquid scintillator detector. The large target mass allows a high precision measurement of the solar 8 B neutrino spectrum, with an unprecedented energy threshold of 2 MeV. Hence, it can probe the MSW-LMA prediction for the electron neutrino survival probability in the transition region between vacuum and matter-dominated neutrino oscillations. Based on Monte Carlo simulations of the solar neutrino and the corresponding background spectra, it was found that the predicted upturn of the solar 8 B neutrino spectrum can be detected with 5 σ significance after 5 years.

Oscillation effects on high-energy neutrino fluxes from astrophysical hidden sources

2006

High-energy neutrinos are expected to be produced in a vareity of astrophysical sources as well as in optically thick hidden sources. We explore the matter-induced oscillation effects on emitted neutrino fluxes of three different flavors from the latter class. We use the ratio of electron and tau induced showers to muon tracks, in upcoming neutrino telescopes, as the principal observable in our analysis. This ratio depends on the neutrino energy, density profile of the sources and on the oscillation parameters. The largely unknown flux normalization drops out of our calculation and only affects the statistics. For the current knowledge of the oscillation parameters we find that the matter-i…

If sterile neutrinos exist, how can one determine the total solar neutrino fluxes?

2002

The 8B solar neutrino flux inferred from a global analysis of solar neutrino experiments is within 11% (1 sigma) of the predicted standard solar model value if only active neutrinos exist, but could be as large as 1.7 times the standard prediction if sterile neutrinos exist. We show that the total 8B neutrino flux (active plus sterile neutrinos) can be determined experimentally to about 10% (1 sigma) by combining charged current measurements made with the KamLAND reactor experiment and with the SNO CC solar neutrino experiment, provided the LMA neutrino oscillation solution is correct and the simulated performance of KamLAND is valid. Including also SNO NC data, the sterile component of the…

Heavy neutrino searches at the lhc with displaced vertices

2013

Sterile neutrinos with masses in the range (1-100) GeV, have been searched for in a variety of experiments. Here, we discuss the prospects to search for sterile neutrinos at the LHC using displaced vertices. Two different cases are discussed: (i) the standard model extended with sterile neutrinos and (ii) right-handed neutrinos in a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. A dedicated displaced vertex search will allow to probe parts of the parameter space not accessible to other searches, but will require large luminosity in both cases.

Isosinglet-neutral heavy-lepton production in Z-decays and neutrino mass

1990

Abstract The possible existence of NHLs is often related to neutrino mass. As a result their production cross section may be correspondingly constrained by observational limits on neutrino masses. We analyze the discovery potential of isosinglet NHLs within various models taking also into account cosmological limits on relic neutrino abundances.

Present Knowledge of the Lepton Mixing Matrix from Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

1986

An analysis of experimental results in the framework of simultaneous oscillations of three neutrino flavours is used, in a combined fit, to constrain the elements of the 3 × 3 unitary lepton mixing matrix and to obtain limits on the three lepton mixing angles αeμ, αe τ and αμτ.

10.2 Discrete Symmetries

2008

1. The asymmetry of the zenith angle distribution of νμ of Super-Kamiokande is the direct evidence of νμ oscillations. 2. The first oscillation minimum was observed in the L/E distribution using the high resolution L/E sample of Super-Kamiokande. It confirms that the distortion of the zenith angle distribution is really due to neutrino oscillations and excludes other hypotheses such as neutrino decay and decoherence model. 3. A search for charged current (CC) interaction of ντ shows a 2.4σ excess of signal and the observed number of events is consistent with the expectation. 4. No indication of νe oscillation is observed so far in atmospheric neutrinos.

The energy spectrum of atmospheric neutrinos between 2 and 200 TeV with the AMANDA-II detector

2010

The muon and anti-muon neutrino energy spectrum is determined from 2000-2003 AMANDA telescope data using regularised unfolding. This is the first measurement of atmospheric neutrinos in the energy range 2 - 200 TeV. The result is compared to different atmospheric neutrino models and it is compatible with the atmospheric neutrinos from pion and kaon decays. No significant contribution from charm hadron decays or extraterrestrial neutrinos is detected. The capabilities to improve the measurement of the neutrino spectrum with the successor experiment IceCube are discussed.

Evidence for High-Energy Extraterrestrial Neutrinos at the IceCube Detector

2013

We report on results of an all-sky search for high-energy neutrino events interacting within the IceCube neutrino detector conducted between May 2010 and May 2012. The search follows up on the previous detection of two PeV neutrino events, with improved sensitivity and extended energy coverage down to approximately 30 TeV. Twenty-six additional events were observed, substantially more than expected from atmospheric backgrounds. Combined, both searches reject a purely atmospheric origin for the twenty-eight events at the $4\sigma$ level. These twenty-eight events, which include the highest energy neutrinos ever observed, have flavors, directions, and energies inconsistent with those expected…
