Chemiluminescence response of ß-glucan stimulated leukocytes isolated from different tissues and peritoneal cavity of Dicentrarchus labrax

Abstract The respiratory burst of leukocytes isolated from sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ) pronephros, peritoneal cavity (P.C.), spleen and blood, was measured by a chemiluminescence (CL) assay after stimulation with β-glucan. The CL response by P.C. and pronephros leukocytes was significantly higher than that expressed by a similar number of cells separated from spleen and blood. This probably reflects the observation that the proportion of macrophages and neutrophils was highest in the populations of leukocytes from peritoneal cavity and pronephros. Chronic exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) affect the immune system of fish and could lead to a decreased disease resistance. The effects of Aroclor 1254, PCB mixtures, on the Diplodus puntazzo innate immunity were examined by assaying the zymosan stimulated chemiluminescence response (CL) of peritoneal cavity cells (PCCs) at various times (1, 24, 48 h and 1-4 weeks) from intraperitoneal injection of the xenobiotic (1 mg kg(-1) body weight). Search for neutrino-induced particle showers with IceCube-40

We report on the search for neutrino-induced particle-showers, so-called cascades, in the IceCube-40 detector. The data for this search was collected between April 2008 and May 2009 when the first 40 IceCube strings were deployed and operational. Three complementary searches were performed, each optimized for different energy regimes. The analysis with the lowest energy threshold (2 TeV) targeted atmospheric neutrinos. A total of 67 events were found, consistent with the expectation of 41 atmospheric muons and 30 atmospheric neutrino events. The two other analyses targeted a harder, astrophysical neutrino flux. Direct measurement of NO3 radical reactivity in a boreal forest

We present the first direct measurements of NO3 reactivity (or inverse lifetime, s−1) in the Finnish boreal forest. The data were obtained during the IBAIRN campaign (Influence of Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions on the Reactive Nitrogen budget) which took place in Hyytiälä, Finland during the summer/autumn transition in September 2016. The NO3 reactivity was generally very high with a maximum value of 0.94 s−1 and displayed a strong diel variation with a campaign-averaged nighttime mean value of 0.11 s−1 compared to a daytime value of 0.04 s−1. In order to highlight the variation of the form due to the presence of different ecological factors, we investigated in this paper the morphological variation between and within the two marine species Salaria basilisca and S. pavo. This study was based on two approaches, the Truss network and the geometric morphometric and involved specimens of both species divided into marine and lagoon samples. Electron Emission of Pt: Experimental Study and Comparison With Models in the Multipactor Energy Range

Experimental data of secondary emission yield (SEY) and electron emission spectra of Pt under electron irradiation for normal incidence and primary energies lower than 1 keV are presented. Several relevant magnitudes, as total SEY, elastic backscattering probability, secondary emission spectrum, and backscattering coefficient, are given for different primary energies. These magnitudes are compared with theoretical or semiempirical formulas commonly used in the related literature.
Recent applications of flow-injection and sequential-injection analysis techniques to chemiluminescence determination of pharmaceuticals

Abstract A review is presented on the state of the art of the chemiluminescence analysis of pharmaceuticals by the two most relevant automated controlled-flow methodologies—flow-injection analysis (FIA) and sequential-injection analysis (SIA). The current chemiluminometric applications of FIA and SIA in pharmaceutical analysis are discussed with special emphasis on the analytical figures of merit and sample matrix characteristics. The review involving 211 references and covering papers published between 2001 and 2006 is divided into several sections according to the fundamental types of chemiluminescence systems employed.

Studies have shown that the footprint of a single eddy covariance (EC) system may not yield representative measurements of the turbulent fluxes at the field scale for sparse vegetated surfaces, whereas scintillometry, due to its larger footprint, may be more suitable for this purpose. Morphological characteristics of ephemeral gullies in Sicily, south Italy

Ephemeral gullies (EGs) are channels of different sizes refilled by tillage equipment normally used on farms. In this paper, the data-set collected from 1995 to 2007 in a wheat-cultivated area in Raddusa (Sicily, Italy), having a surface of almost 80 ha, were used to analyze the morphological characteristics of EGs. The measurements show an high temporal variability in EG characteristics. The EG measurements and the rill erosion measurements carried out in 15 plots located in the experimental “Sparacia” area (Sicily), demonstrated that a morphological similarity condition exists between rills and ephemeral gullies.
