La lucha contra la brecha salarial de género en el Derecho social europeo

2017

[EN] Starting from the assumption that equal pay for female and male workers form parts of the foundations of European Social Law (both as an essential principle and a fundamental right), this essay reflects on two important challenges in order to face the gender wage gap: firstly, the role of social partners and relevant organisations of civil society in salary negotiations; and secondly, the extension of the scope of the valid comparator beyond the same undertaking to make easier the protective role of national judges (alongside other elements such as the assessment of the weight of statistics or the articulation of the proof burden). The author concludes that, in both aspects, the synerg…

The Regionalization of National Input–Output Tables: A Review of the Performance of Two Key Non-survey Methods

2018

This chapter reviews the available empirical evidence on the performance of Flegg’s location quotient (FLQ) and Kronenberg’s Cross-Hauling Adjusted Regionalization Method (CHARM), a relatively new non-survey technique that accounts explicitly for cross-hauling when constructing regional input–output tables. The performance of the FLQ and related formulae is evaluated using official data for 20 Finnish and 16 South Korean regions. The results confirm previous findings that the FLQ can produce far more accurate estimates of regional output multipliers than can simpler LQ-based formulae such as the SLQ and CILQ. We also explore possible ways of determining suitable values for the unknown param…

Evaluating acculturation among adolescents: Instruments and methodologies for measurement

2020

Although a wide literature has highlighted the importance of studying the acculturation processes and its implications as a risk factor for the psychosocial adaptation, currently, very few instruments developed on ad hoc basis for adolescents are available. The present paper offers a review of the instruments for evaluating acculturation among adolescents. Based on an international literature-based analysis, structural features, psychometric qualities, strengths and points of weakness are indicated for each presented measure. Psychometric features, which needs to be gathered in order to advance assessment methods and techniques in this area, are discussed to help both choosing among existin…

Does Commuting Reduce Wage Disparities?

2004

This paper shows that in the Baltic countries, commuting reduces urban-rural wage and employment disparities and increases national output. To quantify the effect of commuting on wage differentials, two sets of earnings functions are estimated (based on Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian Labor Force Surveys) with location variables (capital city, rural, etc.) measured at the workplace and at the place of residence. We find that the ceteris paribus wage gap between capital city and rural areas, as well as between capital and other cities is significantly narrowed by commuting in some cases but remains almost unchanged in other. Different outcomes are explained by country-specific spatial patt…

Written composition performance of students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

2011

ABSTRACTAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequently associated with learning disabilities. The present study examined the written composition of children with ADHD, which depends to a large degree on continuous self-regulation and attentional control skills for organizing information and maintaining the level of effort. Fifty children with ADHD and 50 normally developing children, matched on age and IQ, were assessed using a composition writing task. The results contribute to prior research findings by showing that the children with ADHD performed significantly worse than the comparison groups on the majority of the planning, translation, and revision process measures usua…

Measuring orthographic transparency and morphological-syllabic complexity in alphabetic orthographies

2017

This narrative review discusses quantitative indices measuring differences between alphabetic languages that are related to the process of word recognition. The specific orthography that a child is acquiring has been identified as a central element influencing reading acquisition and dyslexia. However, the development of reliable metrics to measure differences between language scripts hasn’t received much attention so far. This paper therefore reviews metrics proposed in the literature for quantifying orthographic transparency, syllabic complexity, and morphological complexity of alphabetic languages. The review included searches of Web of Science, PubMed, PsychInfo, Google Scholar, and var…

Sex–biased maternal investment in voles: importance of environmental conditions

2004

Adaptive bias in sex allocation is traditionally proposed to be related to the condition of mothers as well as to the unequal fitness values of produced sexes. A positive relationship between mother condition and investment into male offspring is often predicted. This relationship was also recently found to depend on environmental conditions. We studied these causalities experimentally using a design where winter food supply was manipulated in eight outdoor-enclosed populations of field voles Microtus agrestis. At the beginning of the breeding season in spring, food-supplemented mothers seemed to be in a similar condition, measured as body mass, head width, body condition index and parasite…

Bupivacaine 0.5% versus articaine 4% for the removal of lower third molars. A crossover randomized controlled trial.

2012

Objective: To compare the anesthetic action of 0.5% bupivacaine in relation to 4% articaine, both with 1:200,000 epinephrine, in the surgical removal of lower third molars. As a secondary objective hemodynamic changes using both anesthetics were analyzed. Study Design: Triple-blind crossover randomized clinical trial. Eighteen patients underwent bilateral removal of impacted lower third molars using 0.5% bupivacaine or 4% articaine in two different appointments. Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative variables were recorded. Differences were assessed with McNemar tests and repeated measures ANOVA tests. Results: Both solutions exhibited similar latency times and intraoperative effic…
