Mechanical properties and water vapor permeability of starch/montmorillonite nanocomposites
2009
Results of an investigation into an unmodified-montmorillonite (MMT)-filled nanocomposite based on plasticized starch are reported. Data on the influence of MMT content on the tensile mechanical properties of the material are presented. Particular attention is given to the water vapor permeability of the nanocomposite. It is found that the resistance to water permeation of plasticized starch can be improved considerably by introducing a rather small amount of the filler into it. Data on the influence of MMT content on the coefficients of moisture diffusion, solubility, and permeability are reported. Also, a simple method for determining the effect of irregularly oriented platelike filler pa…
Microencapsulation of antioxidant compounds through innovative technologies and its specific application in meat processing
2018
Background Meat has a complex physical structure and chemical composition that is very prone to oxidation. Plants are sources of biologically active compounds (antioxidants) of interest as potential raw materials for meat processing, primary as replacements for synthetic additives. Some examples are essential oils from aromatic plants that are usually unstable under common processing and storage conditions and exhibit strong smell and off flavour. Hence, stable delivery systems like encapsulation are required. Scope and approach Encapsulation, and particularly spray-drying, offers protection of active compounds, their controlled and targeted release in food products and ability to mask unac…
Photocleavable core cross-linked polymeric micelles of polypept(o)ides and ruthenium(II) complexes
2021
Core cross-linking of polymeric micelles has been demonstrated to contribute to enhanced stability that can improve the therapeutic efficacy. Photochemistry has the potential to provide spatial resolution and on-demand drug release. In this study, light-sensitive polypyridyl-ruthenium(II) complexes were combined with polypept(o)ides for photocleavable core cross-linked polymeric micelles. Block copolymers of polysarcosine-block-poly(glutamic acid) were synthesized by ring-opening N-carboxyanhydride polymerization and modified with aromatic nitrile-groups on the glutamic acid side chain. The modified copolymers self-assembled into micelles and were cross-linked by cis-diaquabis(2,2'-bipyridi…
Multi-mycotoxin occurrence in feed, metabolism and carry-over to animal-derived food products: A review
2021
The world requests for raw materials used in animal feed has been steadily rising in the last years driven by higher demands for livestock production. Mycotoxins are frequent toxic metabolites present in these raw materials. The exposure of farm animals to mycotoxins could result in undesirable residues in animal-derived food products. Thus, the potential ingestion of edible animal products (milk, meat and fish) contaminated with mycotoxins constitutes a public health concern, since they enter the food chain and may cause adverse effects upon human health. The present review summarizes the state-of-the-art on the occurrence of mycotoxins in feed, their metabolism and carry-over into animal …
Mycobiota and toxigenic Penicillium species on two Spanish dry-cured ham manufacturing plants
2013
The present study reports the natural mycobiota occurring in dry-cured hams, and in particular on the incidence of mycotoxin-producing fungi. A total of 338 fungal colonies were isolated from three stages of production, these being the post-salting, ripening and aging stages in two manufacturing plants. The results show that fungi were more frequently isolated from the aging stage and that the predominant filamentous fungal genus isolated was Penicillium. Seventy-four of the 338 fungal strains were selected for identification at the species level by using morphological criteria and internal transcribed spacers sequencing. Of the 74 fungal strains, 59 were Penicillium strains. Sixteen Penici…
Phenolic profiles of olive mill wastewaters treated by membrane filtration systems
2014
BACKGROUND Olive mill wastewater is an important by-product obtained after olive oil extraction. In this investigation, the phenolic composition of olive mill wastewater treated with a semi-industrial membrane filtration system, including ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis modules, was studied. In particular, untreated olive mill wastewater was compared with the permeate and the concentrate fractions of each filtration step. RESULTS 3,4-(dihydroxyphenyl) ethanol and p-(hydroxyphenyl) ethanol were the main compounds of all olive mill wastewater analyzed. A total of 32 compounds, detected at 240 or 280 nm by HPLC-DAD, were considered for phenol quantification. Ultrafiltration reduced phenol …
Molar masses and structure in solution of haemoglobin hyperpolymers--a common calibration of size exclusion chromatography of these artificial oxygen…
1997
We are developing artificial oxygen carriers for medical use, based on synthetic polymers--so-called hyperpolymers--obtained by cross-linking mammalian haemoglobins. One requirement with respect to the polymers is that they should not increase the oncotic pressure of blood remarkably--this can be realized by high molecular weights of the polymers with a narrow distribution. They may act as a oxygen transporting blood additive, and--in combination with a plasma expander--as a blood substitute. Another important and desired property of the artificial oxygen carrier is a low viscosity, which--first--is due to a high degree of uniformity of the polymer size (or molar mass) distribution and--sec…
Aroma transfers in and through plastic packagings: orange juice andd-limonene. A review. Part I: Orange juice aroma sorption
1997
Orange juice and one of its major volatile constituents, d-limonene, were probably amongst the first food products to be thoroughly studied. Yet, no extensive literature review has been undertaken in order to obtain a general and accurate description of the sorption and diffusion phenomena. This review underlines the effects of packaging on the organoleptic quality of citrus juices; it therefore presents a focused interest on d-limonene mass transfer experimental results with a variety of plastic polymers. Part I deals with first, loss of organoleptic quality of orange juice during storage and d-limonene sorption is discussed. Second, generalites are presented concerning volatiles transfer …
Design of experiment approach for the optimization of polybrominated diphenyl ethers determination in fine airborne particulate matter by microwave-a…
2015
Abstract A sensitive and selective procedure for the determination of 12 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (BDE-28, BDE-49, BDE-47, BDE-66, BDE-100, BDE-119, BDE-99, BDE-155, BDE-154, BDE-153, BDE-139 and BDE-183) in airbone particulate matter (PM2.5) at trace level has been developed. The proposed method includes extraction PM2.5-bound PBDEs by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) followed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) clean-up and determination by GC-MS/MS using a programmed temperature vaporizer (PTV) in large volume injection (LVI) mode to introduce the sample to the chromatographic system. A design of experiment (DoE) approach was used for the optimization of large volume injectio…
Pyrolysis-GC-MS and CuO-oxidation-HPLC in the characterization of HMMs from sediments and surface waters downstream of a pulp mill
1998
Abstract High molecular mass fractions of lignin and humic compounds in sediments and waters downstream of a pulp mill were characterized applying pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results were compared to those obtained using reversed phase HPLC on the cupric oxide oxidation products. The chromatographic data of both pyrolysis and cupric oxide oxidation were also subjected to the principal component analysis (PCA). The sediment samples and fractions obtained by ultrafiltration of river water samples were freeze dried prior to characterization. The sediment samples were also extracted using 2 M sodium hydroxide solution. The extracts were ultrafiltrated, freeze dried and c…
