Semi-compatible and reciprocally continuous maps in weak non-Archimedean Menger PM-spaces

2012

In this paper, we introduce semi-compatible maps and reciprocally continuous maps in weak non-Archimedean PM-spaces and establish a common fixed point theorem for such maps. Moreover, we show that, in the context of reciprocal continuity, the notions of compatibility and semi-compatibility of maps become equivalent. Our result generalizes several fixed point theorems in the sense that all maps involved in the theorem can be discontinuous even at the common fixed point.

Partidario de la barbarie. Pasolini, Medea, 1969.

2014

2016

We give equidistribution results of elements of function fields over finite fields, and of quadratic irrationals over these fields, in their completed local fields. We deduce these results from equidistribution theorems of common perpendiculars in quotients of trees by lattices in their automorphism groups, proved by using ergodic properties of the discrete geodesic flow.

The contributions of Hilbert and Dehn to non-Archimedean geometries and their impact on the Italian school

2007

In this paper we investigate the contribution of Dehn to the development of non- Archimedean geometries. We will see that it is possible to construct some models of non- Archimedean geometries to prove the independence of the continuity axiom and we will study the interrelations between Archimede’s axiom and Legendre‘s theorems. Some of these interrelations were studied also by Bonola who was one of the very few italian scholars to really appreciate Dehn’s work. We will see that, if Archimede’s axiom does not hold, the hypothesis on the existence and the number of parallel lines through a point is not related to the hypothesis on the sum of the inner angles a triangle. Hilbert himself retur…

First GPS-tracking of Cory’s shearwater in the Mediterranean Sea.

2010

Abstract The behaviour and ecology of seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels and shearwaters have been the subject of numerous studies, often employing the most recent technologies to track birds during their foraging trips. Until now, however, large oceanic species have been preferred for tracking studies because of the dimensions and weight of the devices available. New light-weight GPS (Global Positioning System) loggers (< 9 g) were used to track foraging trips of a medium-sized species, the Cory's shearwater, for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea. The tracks obtained showed that Mediterranean Cory's shearwaters alternatively used one of two different fishing areas. Various explana…

Sexing adult Cory's Shearwater by discriminant analysis of body measurements on Linosa Island (Sicilian Channel), Italy

2001

-Males and females of many avian species may show no plumage dimorphism, but often can be sexed by differences in body measurements. Sex determination of many Cory's Shearwaters Calonectris diomedea, was possible by multiplying bill length by bill depth. In this study, discriminant analysis of six measurements (bill length, bill depth, wing, tail, tarsus and mass) was performed on Cory's Shearwaters breeding on Linosa Island (Sicilian Channel), Italy and the efficiency of sex determination was compared with the univariate method. Results show the advantages of the discriminant functions. Bill depth is the best parameter (up to 92% correct classification), followed by mass (84% correct class…
