The Editorial Opinion of the Mainstream Media During the Catalan Elections of 2017: A Madrid–Barcelona Comparative Study

2020

This article is a follow-up to an article published in the American Behavioral Scientist in 2017, titled “Shaping public opinion for confrontation: Catalan independence claims as represented in Spanish, Catalan, Valencian, and Basque Editorials.” At that time, our study was based on opinions expressed in mainstream newspaper editorials during two significant events in Catalonia’s recent history: the demonstration against the Spanish Constitutional Court ruling on the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia of July 10, 2010, and the mass pro-independence demonstration held on September 11, 2012. The research sought to compare the press reports published in Catalonia, Valencia, and the Basque Count…

Framing the Press and the Publicity Process

2003

This study examines meta-coverage in Campaign 2000, defined as (a) coverage of the behaviors, products, and performance of the news media and (b) coverage of candidates’ use of paid media, communication personnel, and other forms of strategic communication. Using a new model of press framing, a content analysis was conducted on 284 stories aired from September 4 to November 6 on ABC and NBC evening news programs. Results show that 55 stories contained enough press designators and 75 stories contained enough publicity designators to qualify for framing analysis. A small percentage (12%) contained overlapping press and publicity designators, resulting in 116 stories that qualified for framin…

Nazis, Pollution, and no Sex

2004

This article briefly summarizes the German research literature on scandal and then outlines a theory of scandal as a socially constructed communication pattern. The theory distinguishes macro- and micro-level approaches for addressing the question of which malfunctions a society selects for scandal. The manifest and latent functions of scandals are discussed with special emphasis on the role of the mass media. The authors’concept of scandal is linked to the concept of political culture. The article then reviews, from a comparative cross-national point of view, (a) scandals that were formative for the development of democratic political culture in Germany, (b) scandals that are linked to th…

Shaping public Opinion for confrontation : catalan independence claims as represented in spanish, catalan, valencian, and basque editorials

2017

Editorials represent a newspaper’s principal means of ideological positioning and serve to identify the attitude of each newspaper and its readership to some of the main actors in any given conflict, especially those that are political in nature. Catalonia’s independence movement has experienced a surge in recent years. The turning point came in July 2010, after Spain’s constitutional court ruled against some aspects of Catalonia’s Statute of Autonomy (the legislation regulating the relationship between the Catalan autonomous community and the Spanish state). The ruling annulled some of the articles of the statute. The demonstration in support of Catalan independence that took place on Sep…

Establishing Video Game Genres Using Data-Driven Modeling and Product Databases

2015

Establishing genres is the first step toward analyzing games and how the genre landscape evolves over the years. We use data-driven modeling that distils genres from textual descriptions of a large collection of games. We analyze the evolution of game genres from 1979 till 2010. Our results indicate that until 1990, there have been many genres competing for dominance, but thereafter sport-racing, strategy, and action have become the most prevalent genres. Moreover, we find that games vary to a great extent as to whether they belong mostly to one genre or to a combination of several genres. We also compare the results of our data-driven model with two product databases, Metacritic and Mobyga…

Touring the magical North : Borealism and the indigenous Sámi in contemporary English-language children’s fantasy literature

2017

Discourses of exotic Lapland with its indigenous inhabitants, the Sámi, are widely circulated in the tourist industry and also surface in contemporary English-language children’s fantasy fiction. In contrast to the ‘self-orientalism’ of discourses of tourism, where places and people are represented as exotic to a tourist gaze, the portrayals of the North and its inhabitants gain different symbolic meanings in fictional texts produced by outsiders who rely on earlier texts – myths, fairy tales and anthropological accounts – rather than on their own lived experience of the North or indigeneity. This article applies the concept of Borealism to examine cross-cultural intertextuality and discou…

Giménez Moreno, Rosa (ed.). (2010). Words for Working. Professional and Academic English for International Business and Economics

2011

Gimenez Moreno, Rosa (ed.). (2010). Words for Working. Professional and Academic English for International Business and Economics. Valencia. Universitat de Valencia (PUV). Coleccion: Educacio. Laboratori de Materials 28. Pages: 400. ISBN: 978-84-370- 7873-1 There are many ways in which one can sell and it is certainly one of the most important aspects of business to be able to place a product successfully in the market. From a creative and editorial point of view a telling title is similarly weighty and this book fulfils that premise: a hand-book whose very title calls the attention of the prospective reader/user by underlining its operative quality. Words to work with, operative language, …

Autoficción, historia y mito en la narrativa del subcomandante Marcos

2018

The uprising of 1994 by the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) in Mexico, represented not only a political and military event but also a discursive one. In this study, I analyse the ways in which historical and factual dimensions are intertwined with the personal accounts written by  Subcomandante Marcos ; military leader and spokesperson of the EZLN. The deputy commander’s writing poses specific difficulties, given that he wrote directly from the frontline and under the urgency of this historical period. Such writing conditions stimulate us to examine the transitional modalities between live memory and textual representation, and to look at the genres and rhetorical devices that are…
