Reconceptualizing cultural literacy as a dialogic practice
2019
Culture and heritage are plural and fluid, continually co-created through interaction between people. However, traditional monologic models of cultural literacy reflect a one-way transmission of static cultural knowledge. Using the context of a large European project and augmenting the work of Buber with models of literacy as social practice, in this article cultural literacy is reconceptualized as fundamentally dialogic. We argue that cultural literacy empowers intercultural dialogue, opening a dialogic space with inherent democratic potential. Considering implications for the classroom, we outline how a dialogic pedagogy can provide a suitable context for the development of young people's…
Scenekunstens (for)handlingsrom etter 22. juli
2019
In this article I discuss theatre’s scope of action after the 2011 terror attacks in Norway (“22. July”), with an emphasis on independent theatre, aesthetic heteronomy and the public sphere. A theatre manager’s (Jon Refsdal Moe) retrospect account of and reflections upon a case of self-censoring is the starting point for my (re-)examination of the arguments and dynamics concerning some of the most prominent contentious 22. July performances. I discuss how the controversies can be understood and dealt with, and how they are connected to theatre’s scope of action and place in society today. In my argument, I differentiate between the public sphere as an arena for discussion and debate (which …
Analysis of the Pre and Post-COVID-19 Lockdown Use of Smartphone Apps in Spain
2021
The global pandemic of COVID-19 has changed our daily habits and has undoubtedly affected our smartphone usage time. This paper attempts to characterize the changes in the time of use of smartphones and their applications between the pre-lockdown and post-lockdown periods in Spain, during the first COVID-19 confinement in 2020. This study analyzes data from 1940 participants, which was obtained both from a survey and from a tracking application installed on their smartphones. We propose manifold learning techniques such as clustering, to assess, both in a quantitative and in a qualitative way, the behavioral and social effects and implications of confinement in the Spanish population. We al…

Frontstage and Backstage in Argentina’s Transitional Justice Drama: The Niet@s’ Reconstruction of Identity on Social Media
2019
Abstract∞ This article provides new insight into how the ‘found grandchildren’ of postconflict Argentina are reconstructing their sense of self and identity after having been identified as children of disappeared political activists in the aftermath of the last military regime (1976–1983). We offer tools for understanding how they respond to the context-specific transitional justice measures of identification and restitution, and how this plays out on social media. This online world expands the possibilities to both share and comment on personal and public information. The narrative analysis discusses how our informants influence the Argentine transitional justice process by using social me…
Enabling Backoff and Eliminating Redundant Idle Period for Medium Access in LTE-U
2017
To address the burgeoning demand for mobile data, 3GPP is actively studying the capability of operating LTE in the unlicensed band, referred to as LTE-U. One of the main challenges of this approach is to maintain better coexistence between WiFi and LTE-U devices. To enable the coexistence, the listen before talk (LBT) principle has been adopted for LTE-U medium access with two flavors of mechanisms, i.e., load based equipment (LBE) and frame based equipment (FBE) access. In this paper, we consider the FBE mechanism and enhance its performance by introducing a backoff procedure for LTE devices. We investigate the original FBE mechanism defined by 3GPP and the enhanced FBE (E- FBE) mechanism fr…
Driving Through Neoliberalism : Finnish Truck Drivers Constructing Respectable Male Worker Subjectivities
2017
This chapter analyses how Finnish male truck drivers (re)produce themselves as respectable male workers in the face of the recent economic, technological and institutional transformations impacting the European haulage sector. The investigation is based on ethnographic data which are produced by riding along on assignments with ten male Finnish truck drivers in the period 2012–2016. The analysis shows how truck drivers’ independence and value in the work process has become challenged and how truckers experience being occupationally stigmatized. The study argues, however, that while economic restructuring undermines some components of traditional forms of working-class masculinity, masculine…
That’s all, folks. Guerriglie e strategie di fine puntata
2020
