The Concept of Culture in Media Studies: A Critical Review of Academic Literature

This study examines the way culture has been researched in media studies and suggests how critical intercultural communication could contribute to the field. A literature review was conducted and articles (N=114) published in peer-reviewed journals between 2003 and 2013 were collected. Results show that studies dealing with media and culture do not systematically define the concept of culture. Findings also indicate that culture is oftentimes taken for granted instead of being problematized and addressed as a source of struggle. Advantages of using a critical intercultural communication framework to examine culture are discussed.

The 3rd of October 2013 more than 300 migrants died after a boat sank off the coasts of Lampedusa. This probably was the most dramatic shipwreck ever happened in the Mediterranean, and certainly the one which attracted the most media attention in Italy and elsewhere. Interconceptualizing Europe and Peace : Identity Building Under the European Heritage Label

AbstractThis chapter investigates how peace is used in attempts to build a collective identity for the European Union in the context of the European Heritage Label (EHL), a central instrument in the EU’s cultural heritage policy. The official EHL documents and the websites of the EHL sites are analysed using a conceptual approach that particularly focuses on the interconceptualizations between peace and Europe. The ways peace is discussed can be divided into four thematic categories: treaties, institutions, practices, and symbols related to peace. The chapter concludes that heritage related to peace is mainly discussed in a non-contradictory manner, with little space for dissonance.

Abstract Reading on digital devices has become a widely debated issue in mass media and academia. The dawn and consolidation of digital technology have made possible new devices for reading. In the Internet era, reading is not just a matter of books and paper. This loss of exclusiveness has generated different anxieties in many intellectuals, researchers, journalists, editors, and publishers related to the printing environment. An analysis of such uneasiness can provide clues about the hidden interests and misunderstandings implied in their arguments. This paper presents initial results from a study exploring teacher students’ experiences related to the gamification of an online learning platform in higher education. Interpersonal forgiveness and meaning in life in older adults: The mediating and moderating roles of the religious meaning system

Forgiving others may play an important role in achieving meaning in life as it offers a valuable platform for deliberate moral acts of acceptance of positive affect, behaviour, and cognition towards a transgressor. The aim of this paper was to analyse the relationship between forgiveness and presence, and the search for meaning in life, as well as the mediating role of the religious meaning system in this relationship among older adults. A total of 205 older adults, 112 women and 93 men, participated in the study. The mean age was 72.59. Multiverse Ethnography: A Qualitative Method for Gaming and Technology Use Research

This article introduces multiverse ethnography as a systematic team-based qualitative method for studying the mechanical, structural and experiential properties of video games and other technological artefacts. Instead of applying the ethnographic method to produce a single in-depth account, multiverse ethnography includes multiple researchers carrying out coordinated synergetic ethnographic work on the same research object, thus producing a multiverse of interpretations and perspectives.
