Susceptibility of Spodoptera frugiperda and S. exigua to Bacillus thuringiensis Vip3Aa insecticidal protein
2011
The Vip3Aa protein is an insecticidal protein secreted by Bacillus thuringiensis during the vegetative stage of growth. The activity of this protein has been tested after different steps/protocols of purification using Spodoptera frugiperda as a control insect. The results showed that the Vip3Aa protoxin was stable and retained full toxicity after being subjected to common biochemical steps used in protein purification. Bioassays with the protoxin in S. frugiperda and S. exigua showed pronounced differences in LC(50) values when mortality was measured at 7 vs. 10d. At 7d most live larvae were arrested in their development. LC(50) values of "functional mortality" (dead larvae plus larvae rem…
Full-parallax 3D display from the hole-filtered depth information
2015
In this paper we introduce an efficient hole-filling algorithm for synthetic generation of microimages that are displayed on an integral imaging monitor. We apply the joint bilateral filter and the median filter to the captured depth map. We introduce in any step of the iterative algorithm with the data from a new Kinect capture. As a result, this algorithm can improve the quality of the depth maps and remove unmeasured depth holes effectively. This refined depth information enables to create a tidy integral image, which can be projected into an integral imaging monitor. In this way the monitor can display 3D images with continuous views, full parallax and abundant 3D reconstructed scene fo…
Lasten internetinkäytön kulttuuri ja riippuvuuden piirteiden ilmeneminen 4.-luokkalaisten tietokoneenkäyttötottumuksissa
2012
Arola, E. & Havula, S. 2012. ”Elämä ilman internetiä olisi tylsää, mutta ehkä jopa kivaakin”. Lasten internetin käytön kulttuuri ja riippuvuuden piirteiden ilmeneminen neljäsluokkalaisten tietokoneenkäyttötottumuksissa. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Opettajankoulutuslaitos. Pro gradu -tutkielma. Tutkielmassa perehdyttiin neljäsluokkalaisten internetin käyttökulttuuriin sekä riippuvuuden piirteiden ilmenemiseen heidän tietokoneenkäyttötottumuksissaan. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kartoittaa neljäsluokkalaisten tietokoneen ja internetin käytön määrää ja piirteitä, tietokoneen käytön jakautumista viikolla, vapaa-ajan harrastusten yhteyttä tietokoneen käytön määrään sekä internetin käyttöön motivoivia t…
Heterogeneity of traditional and digital media use among older adults : A six-country comparison
2021
The concept of aged heterogeneity has been associated with older adults' ability to adapt to the digital age without a systematic empirical analysis. We analyse retired adults' (aged 62 or more) use of traditional media and their digital equivalents in six countries. First, we ask whether heterogeneity in traditional and digital media use increases with age. Second, we study to what extent gender is related to this heterogeneity, and third, the country differences in the heterogeneity of media use in later life. We analyse the 2018 data (N = 5865) of the ‘Older audiences in the digital media environment’ survey using zero-inflated negative binomial models. The results provide partial suppor…
EP260 Is there still a role for laparoscopic radical hysterectomy? Personalizing surgical approach in early stage cervical cancer
2019
Introduction/Background To compare survival outcomes of laparoscopic and open surgery for radical hysterectomy (RH) among patients with early-stage cervical cancer (CC) and to identify which subgroups may benefit from one approach rather than the other. Methodology 237 and 303 consecutive patients, with clinical FIGO stage from IA1 with lymph vascular space involvement to IB1/IIA1 CC underwent open and laparoscopic RH respectively in 3 Italian Institutions. Differences in terms of progression-free survival (PFS) between the two surgical approaches were tested in the entire population and in different patient‘s subgroups. Results Median follow up was 34 months. Open and laparoscopy procedure…
Biological Responses of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to Steinernema carpocapsae (Nemat…
2013
Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier 1790) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is becoming a serious problem in Mediterranean areas where it is well-adapted, and now is present even in the United States (California). The infestations are primarily in urban areas where chemical control is not advisable and million of Euros are spent to control it. The effects of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (Nematoda: Steinernematidae) on mortality, growth, as well as the immune activity of R. ferrugineus larvae, were investigated. R. ferrugineus mortality exhibited a positive trend with the dosage and duration of exposure to S. carpocapsae. The median lethal dose and median lethal time, impor…
Perineuronal Net Formation and the Critical Period for Neuronal Maturation in the Hypothalamic Arcuate Nucleus
2019
In leptin-deficient ob/ob mice, obesity and diabetes are associated with abnormal development of neurocircuits in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC)1, a critical brain area for energy and glucose homoeostasis2,3. Because this developmental defect can be remedied by systemic leptin administration, but only if given before postnatal day 28, a critical period for leptin-dependent development of ARC neurocircuits has been proposed4. In other brain areas, critical-period closure coincides with the appearance of perineuronal nets (PNNs), extracellular matrix specializations that restrict the plasticity of neurons that they enmesh5. Here we report that in humans and rodents, subsets of neurons…
Modifications in Evoked Activity in the Visual Cortex Induced by the Caudate Nucleus
1971
The visual system, like the other sensorial systems, is subjected to intrinsic, complex control, originating both in the retina (CHANG et al., 1959; ARDUINI and HIRAO, 1960; STERIADE, 1967) and in the visual cortex (BUSER et a/., 1963; JASSIK-GERSCHENFELD and ASCHER, 1963; MEULDERS, 1965), which regulates its input at various levels of the specific pathways. However, the visual system is also influenced by subcortical structures which, though not exerting on it a strictly selective control, determine notable modifications in the level of excitability of the cortical sensorial neurons. It is in fact we11 known that activation of the mesencephalic reticular formation, by increasing the level …
Dissertation: “In the intersection of television and Twitter : Social television as a tool for interaction and participation in a media event”
2020
This dissertation presents the phenomenon of social television by focusing on the interplay between the traditional broadcast media and the newer social media in the context of the FIFA World Cup. The aim of the study is to shed light on interactional practices that are generated in the intersection of television and Twitter. Through the lens of digital discourse and conversation analysis the study examines how the participation in a media event is constructed in live tweeting practices. The dissertation shows that social media have offered new ways of participating and enjoying television content but have not replaced the role of traditional television as a central medium for experiencing …
Diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tests for advanced fibrosis in patients with NAFLD : an individual patient data meta-analysis
2021
ObjectiveLiver biopsy is still needed for fibrosis staging in many patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The aims of this study were to evaluate the individual diagnostic performance of liver stiffness measurement by vibration controlled transient elastography (LSM-VCTE), Fibrosis-4 Index (FIB-4) and NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) Fibrosis Score (NFS) and to derive diagnostic strategies that could reduce the need for liver biopsies.DesignIndividual patient data meta-analysis of studies evaluating LSM-VCTE against liver histology was conducted. FIB-4 and NFS were computed where possible. Sensitivity, specificity and area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) were c…
