Dark matter-neutrino interactions through the lens of their cosmological implications
2018
Dark matter and neutrinos provide the two most compelling pieces of evidence for new physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics but they are often treated as two different sectors. The aim of this paper is to determine whether there are viable particle physics frameworks in which dark matter can be coupled to active neutrinos. We use a simplified model approach to determine all possible renormalizable scenarios where there is such a coupling, and study their astrophysical and cosmological signatures. We find that dark matter-neutrino interactions have an impact on structure formation and lead to indirect detection signatures when the coupling between dark matter and neutrinos is …
Mediation as a Process for the Management of Conflict and the Improvement of Coexistence in Educational Centres. A Study Based on the Perceptions of …
2017
Abstract School mediation is a strategy which is increasingly being implemented in a greater number of educational centres because of all its benefits. Besides being a communicative process which allows confronting conflicts in a participative manner, it involves learning different social and personal skills. Ultimately, it enables the strengthening of the students’ interpersonal relationships while fostering coexistence at school. If coexistence is built by action and the school is a setting where continuous interactions occur, it seems appropriate to think of the school environment as a place to learn how to coexist. Nevertheless, the studies aimed at knowing the impact of mediation are s…
Arsenic Sorption onto Peat and Iron Humates
2012
Environmental pollution with arsenic is a global problem; therefore, new remediation methods are needed. Peat modified with iron compounds and iron humates were prepared and tested for sorption of arsenic compounds. The highest sorption capacity was observed when iron-modified peat was used. Sorption of different arsenic speciation forms onto iron-modified peat sorbents was investigated as a function of pH, reaction time and temperature. Sorption capacity increases with temperature and was spontaneous and endothermic.
The Impact of Humic Substances as Remediation Agents to the Speciation Forms of Metals in Soil
2013
Abstract Humic substances (HS) are the most widespread group of organic substances in natural environment and have high stability. The main terrestrial reserves are found in the form of naturally occurring ore, peat or lignite. The aim of this paper is to study possibilities to use HS as agents for remediation of contaminated with heavy metals soil and impacts of HS of metal speciation forms in it. It has been proved that HS are able to bind to metal ions and change their speciation forms in soils. The ability to form complexes with metal ions depends on the type of soil, type of metal, as well as concentrations of HS in soil. The study was carried out in experimental conditions and analyti…

Search for anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking with the ATLAS detector based on a disappearing-track signature in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$…
2012
In models of anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB), the lightest chargino is predicted to have a lifetime long enough to be detected in collider experiments. This letter explores AMSB scenarios in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV by attempting to identify decaying charginos which result in tracks that appear to have few associated hits in the outer region of the tracking system. The search was based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.02 fb[superscript −1] collected with the ATLAS detector in 2011. The pT spectrum of candidate tracks is found to be consistent with the expectation from Standard Model background processes and constraints on the lifetime and the production…
Shoot accumulation of several trace elements in native plant species from contaminated soils in the Peruvian Andes
2012
Abstract Metal mining gives access to very important resources but contributes to severe and diverse environmental problems. Until recently, little has been known about the remediation of mining sites in Latin America using metallophytes. The present study was designed to identify and characterize spontaneously growing heavy metal tolerant plant species in the area around the polymetallic Carolina mine in Hualgayoc (Cajamarca, Peru). The aim was to find species that are potentially useful for phytoremediation. Plants and soils were sampled and analysed for concentrations of As, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn and Ti. The Translocation Factor (TF) and the Bioaccumulation Factor (BF) were determined and used …
Wild Plants from Coastal Habitats as a Potential Resource for Soil Remediation
2020
The aim of the present review is to stimulate an interest in experimental exploration of native coastal plants as a valuable resource for development of and use in environmental remediation technologies. An attempt is made to analyze wild plant species from different coastal habitats in respect to the functional properties useful for soil remediation purposes. Several plant species from a number of coastal plant genera are described as potential models for further studies aimed at practical environmental phytoremediation, including Armeria maritima, Rumex hydrolapathum, Ranunculus sceleratus, Anthyllis maritima, Alyssum montanum subsp. gmelinii, and Sedum maximum. It is concluded that a lar…
Screening of microalgae and LED grow light spectra for effective removal of dissolved nutrients from cold-water recirculating aquaculture system (RAS…
2019
Popularity of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is increasing. Because of the high water recirculation rate, dissolved nutrients originating from fish feed are concentrated enough in RAS wastewater (WW) to enable growth of primary producers, e.g. microalgae. This study evaluated nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) and phosphate-phosphorus (PO4-P) removal efficiency of ten temperate zone freshwater microalgae species during their exponential growth phase in unfiltered RAS WW at 17 ± 0.5 °C. Growth and nutrient uptake efficiency of six green and four non-green microalgae strains were compared between WW and reference growth medium in batch monocultures. The effect of three different LED grow light…
