Synthesis and characterization of modified sulfonated chitosan for beryllium recovery

2019

Abstract A new adsorbent, sulfated crosslinked chitosan (SGCH), has been synthesized for the effective extraction of beryllium ions from their aqueous solutions. In recent times, beryllium extraction has been of great importance because beryllium can be used in many applications such as in nuclear reactor, heat shields, high-technology ceramics, alloys and electronic heat sinks. SGCH has been synthesized by two successive phases. The first is the conversion of chitosan (CH) into non-soluble cross-linked chitosan (GCH) through the interaction between chitosan and glutaraldehyde. The second step is the formation of functional sulfonate groups onto the adsorbent material through the interactio…

Titania Photocatalysts for Selective Oxidations in Water

2011

Heterogeneous photocatalysis by polycrystalline semiconductor oxides is an unconventional technology that has been mainly applied for the degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants in both the vapor and liquid phase. The application of photocatalysis in synthetic routes has also been researched in recent years, demonstrating its viability as an alternative route in organic chemistry. This work illustrates the main findings in the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis to the oxidation of organic compounds dissolved in water, free of any organic co-solvent. Two main aspects of the oxidative process have been studied: the first one is the partial oxidation of various mono-substitute…

Immigrant prisoners in Italy. Cultural mediation to reduce social isolation and increase migrant prisoner well-being?

2022

Purpose This study aims to highlight how easy it is for immigrants to break Italian law because of the country’s inadequate cultural and linguistic mediation service. Insufficiencies in this service also have a negative impact on both the psychological and physical health of migrant prisoners. Furthermore, Italian is used in legal disputes and prison, and reference is made to Italian culture, preventing migrants from understanding their position regarding the law. Design/methodology/approach This report concerns the psychological discomfort of migrant incarcerated individuals within Italian prisons due to national laws in force. Consideration is also given to the negative impact on the phy…

Translation or Transcreation? Discourses, Texts and Visuals

2018

Translation or Transcreation? Discourses, Texts and Visuals presents us with an apparent dilemma: is translation primarily a form of transfer or a form of creation? This dilemma harks back to a series of questions about the nature of creativity which are at the heart of Western philosophy and aesthetics: what distinguishes an original from a reproduction? What is original in every “translation” and what has already been translated in every “original”? While these questions have been theoretically debated in the past fifty years mainly in the contexts of French and American deconstruction, contemporary communication practices bring them back on the table with renewed urgency. The global flow…

Introduction. The wheres, whats and whys of transcreation

2018

As the Translation Studies community advances in an increasingly networked globe and the new market needs change, the range of interests of translation as a discipline broadens, new proposals are put forward by the market stakeholders and new challenges are discussed in academia. Since the conventional model of one-on-one agency and client is being replaced by a vast global network of translators, new modes of translation, such as fansubbing, fandubbing, crowdsourcing and transcreation, have challenged the traditional structure of the translation market and ethics of the discipline. Against this backdrop, a debate has emerged around translation and transcreation (see Cultus 2014), mostly in…

Effects of plant species in a horizontal subsurface flow constructedwetland – phytoremediation of treated urban wastewater withCyperus alternifolius …

2013

Abstract Plant species carry out a series of important biological, chemical and physical processes within a constructed wetland wastewater treatment system and make a significant contribution to wastewater purification. This paper compares two emergent macrophytes – Cyperus alternifolius L. and Typha latifolia L. – planted separately in a pilot horizontal subsurface flow system for the phytoremediation of treated urban wastewater in the West of Sicily (Italy). The total surface area of the three units within the pilot system was 99 m 2 . Six subunits were planted with two species and three subunits were left unplanted as the control. The main aim of the study was to demonstrate that, under …

Interactions of Societal Actors and Local Government in Institutionalized Governance Arrangements: The Book’s Scope and Content

2020

The chapter sets the stage for a comparative analysis of institutionalized governance networks grouping local governments and individual and collective or corporate societal actors unfolding at the municipal, sub-municipal and inter-municipal level. It details the premises for analyzing these networks with an emphasis on organized interests and interest intermediation and their relationship with the notion of democracy. It then reviews existing literature on the relationship between local governments and societal actors at two different levels. With reference to the municipal (micro) level, it looks at interest theory, the community power debate and the local governance approach. With refer…
