The effectiveness of adding compost and the plant Medicago sativa in improving the quality of a soil historically contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was tested in greenhouse microcosms. Plant pots, containing soil samples from an area contaminated by PCBs, were treated with the compost and the plant, separately or together. The present study assessed the diversity of pheno-morphological and agronomic traits among 31 natural populations of burr medic (Medicago polymorpha L.) from different environments throughout Sicily, and analysed the patterns of phenotypic diversity in relation to the environmental parameters of each collection site. Accessions with no germinating seeds are a common problem in plant gene banks and research institutions. Our goal was to elaborate and apply an in vitro method of germination and multiplication of old aged seeds of red and alsike clover and alfalfa. Eighteen clover and five alfalfa accessions were used for germination in vitro. Most of the accessions had produced seeds more than 20 years ago and the seeds did not germinate in soil. Nitrogen (N) is a major limiting factor for plant growth. N availability can also impact plant resistance to pathogens by regulating plant immunity. To better understand the links between N nutrition and plant defense, we analyzed the impact of N availability of plant on Medicago truncatula resistance to the root pathogen, Aphanomyces euteiches, taking into account plant genetic variability. This oomycete is considered as the most limiting factor for legume production. Two conditions of N nutrition, non-limiting or deprived in N, and ten plant genotypes were tested in vitro.
