The association between intrapartum opioid fentanyl and early breastfeeding: A prospective observational study

2021

Introduction: Intrapartum opioids in labor may interfere with the early breastfeeding phase and cause breastfeeding difficulties. This study examines the effects of intrapartum fentanyl given intravenously (IV) or through epidural analgesia (EDA) on early breastfeeding. Material and methods: This is a prospective observational study conducted in a regional maternity unit. We included 1101 healthy mothers of term singleton babies in vertex presentation born between 2016 and 2018 (468 nulliparous and 633 multiparous). The main data were collected prospectively, and additional data were retrieved from hospital records. The main outcome measures were exclusive breastfeeding at discharge, sponta…

Empowering citizens for well-being and chronic disease management with wellness diary.

2010

Chronic conditions closely related to lifestyles are the major cause of disability and death in the developed world. Behavior change is the key to managing well-being and preventing and managing chronic diseases. Wellness diary (WD) is a mobile application designed to support citizens in learning about their behavior, and both making and maintaining behavior changes. WD has been found acceptable, useful, and suitable for long-term use as a part of an intervention. When used independently, however, it does not seem to have enough engaging and motivating features to support adoption and long-term commitment. The main improvement needs identified based on a review of WD-related studies were: p…

Determinants of homonym and synonym rates of record linkage in disease registration.

1996

AbstractReliable record linkage is an essential component of the quality of population-based disease registration. Quality assessment of disease registries should, therefore, include quantitative approaches to describe the extent of record-linkage errors. The homonym and synonym rates have been proposed for this purpose. The homonym rate quantifies the proportion of distinct patients excluded from registration due to erroneous linkage with other patients. The synonym rate quantifies the proportion of unrecognized duplicate notifications on patients already registered in the registry. This paper provides an algebraic assessment of the determinants of both rates. It is shown how the homonym a…

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) Phase 4 (2018): Change management in allergic rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity using mobile techn…

2019

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline by using the best approach to integrated care pathways using mobile technology in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. The proposed next phase of ARIA is change management, with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to patients with rhinitis and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the lifecycle irrespective of their sex or socioeconomic status to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the effect of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines. A second c…

Evaluation of Record Linkage Methods for Iterative Insertions

2009

Summary Objectives: There have been many developments and applications of mathematical methods in the context of record linkage as one area of interdisciplinary research efforts. However, comparative evaluations of record linkage methods are still underrepresented. In this paper improvements of the Fellegi-Sunter model are compared with other elaborated classification methods in order to direct further research endeavors to the most promising methodologies. Methods: The task of linking records can be viewed as a special form of object identification. We consider several non-stochastic methods and procedures for the record linkage task in addition to the Fellegi-Sunter model and perform an e…

E-health progresses in Romania

2006

The paper is presenting the recent evolution of e-health aspects in Romania. Data presented are based on governmental reports. Surveys organized by the "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu and studies carried on by the national Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (I.C.I.) have shown that Romania has important health problems, from cardio vascular diseases (CVD) to cancer and infectious diseases, a high score on mortality and morbidity and a low one on natality. Poor management of the health sector did not help to solve all these problems. In the last 14 years there were several attempts to reform healthcare but none succeeded until now. The health insurance system is operati…

PASSIM – an open source software system for managing information in biomedical studies

2007

Abstract Background One of the crucial aspects of day-to-day laboratory information management is collection, storage and retrieval of information about research subjects and biomedical samples. An efficient link between sample data and experiment results is absolutely imperative for a successful outcome of a biomedical study. Currently available software solutions are largely limited to large-scale, expensive commercial Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). Acquiring such LIMS indeed can bring laboratory information management to a higher level, but often implies sufficient investment of time, effort and funds, which are not always available. There is a clear need for lightweig…

Internationally adopted children: a new challenge for pediatricians.

2006

Children adopted from abroad by Italian families have increased during the last years. Since 2001 to 2004 they have been more than 10,000, mainly from Eastern Europe, and all indications suggest that they will continue to increase. Most of the internationally adopted children reside in orphanage before adoption where they may experience malnutrition, exposure to infectious diseases, environmental deprivation, neglect. Moreover, their pre-adoptive records are scarcely reliable and their immunization status is not always adequate. The most common long-term problems of internationally adopted children concern developmental and scholastic delay especially if they come from a long and severely d…

Enabling Primary and Specialist Care Interoperability Through HL7 CDA Release 2 and the Chronic Care Model: An Italian Case Study

2012

Interoperability is the key to enable clinical information systems for General Practitioners (GP) and Hospital Specialists (HS) in order to exchange and manage the Chronic Care Models (CCM) medical records, Patient Summary (PS), and Electronic Prescription (e-Prescription) documents while accessing the electronic health record. We present a localization experience for PS and e-prescription, based on the Health Level Seven Version 3 Clinical Document Architecture Release 2, developed for Italian healthcare. We describe also an experience on the implementation of CCM for sharing patient clinical data among healthcare providers in the management of diagnostic and therapeutic pathways for chron…
