Distributed medical images analysis on a Grid infrastructure

In this paper medical applications on a Grid infrastructure, the MAGIC-5 Project, are presented and discussed. MAGIC-5 aims at developing Computer Aided Detection (CADe) software for the analysis of medical images on distributed databases by means of GRID Services. The use of automated systems for analyzing medical images improves radiologists’ performance; in addition, it could be of paramount importance in screening programs, due to the huge amount of data to check and the cost of related manpower. A Novel Web Service for Mammography Images Indexing

Medical community needs to extract precise information from a large amount of data. These data are a collection of different types such as text documents, images and video. Currently medical technology do not provide an intelligent methodology for documents recovery and classification of such documents based on their content. CdTe Detectors

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) compound semiconductors for x-ray detectors have experienced a rather rapid development in the last few years, due to their appealing performance. In this chapter we review the physical properties of semiconductor detectors for x-ray and γ ray spectroscopy. In particular, we focus on compound semiconductor detectors. We also review the principles of operation of both the semiconductor detectors and the electronic chains, with special emphasis on the digital techniques. CdTe detectors’ characteristics and performance enhancements are discussed in depth. Finally, we present some original results on CdTe detectors for medical applications.

The role of the polymer interfacial area on free radical grafting of acrylic acid (AA) onto poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) was studied at 65°C using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a solvent and swelling agent, benzoylperoxide (BPO) as chemical initiator and PVDF nanoparticles as polymer matrix. Under adopted conditions PVDF particles do not melt neither dissolve in the reaction medium and FTIR analyses performed on carefully washed nanoparticles confirmed the achievement of high grafting levels. The current demand for new antimicrobial systems has stimulated research for the development of poly(lactic acid)/carvacrol (PLA/CAR)-based materials able to hinder the growth and spread of microorganisms. The eco-friendly characteristics of PLA and cytocompatibility make it very promising in the perspective of green chemistry applications as material for food and biomedical employments. The IEEE 802.15.6 working group aims to develop a communications standard optimised for low power devices operating on, in or around the human body. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are key components of the epigenetic machinery controlling gene expression. They are involved in chromatin remodeling events via post-translational histone modifications but may also act on nonhistone proteins, influencing many fundamental cellular processes. Due to the key involvement of HDACs in serious human pathologies, including cancer, HDAC inhibitors (HDACis) have received increased attention in recent years. It is known that marine invertebrates produce significant amounts of secondary metabolites showing active pharmacological properties and an extensive spectrum of biomedical applications.
