The use of nomograms in LDR-HDR prostate brachytherapy

2011

Purpose: The common use of nomograms in Low Dose Rate (LDR) permanent prostate brachytherapy (BT) allows to estimate the number of seeds required for an implant. Independent dosimetry verification is recommended for each clinical dosimetry in BT. Also, nomograms can be useful for dose calculation quality assurance and they could be adapt ed to High Dose Rate (HDR). This work sets nomograms for LDR and HDR prostate-BT implants, which are applied to three different institutions that use different implant techniques. Material and methods: Patients treated throughout 2010 till April 2011 were considered for this study. This exam ple was chosen to be the representative of the latest implant tech…

Analysis of skin basalioma and melanoma by multispectral imaging

2012

A clinical trial involving multi-spectral imaging of histologically confirmed 8 basaliomas and 30 melanomas was performed. Parametric maps of the melanin index, erythema index and melanoma-nevus differentiation parameter have been constructed and mutually compared. Specific features of basalioma and melanoma images were analyzed and discussed.

Advancing frontiers in rheumatic and musculoskeletal imaging.

2021

AbstractIn recent years, technological improvements allowed imaging modalities to become increasingly essential in achieving early and precise diagnoses in the field of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). To date, imaging examinations are routinely used in all steps of diagnostic and therapeutic care pathways of patients affected by RMDs. The articles published in this Article Collection clearly show the efforts of researchers to find innovative applications of musculoskeletal imaging in clinical practice and to face the crucial challenges that remain in the interpretation and quality control of images. Highly performing diagnostic technologies are currently available to early di…

Patient-centered web-based information on oral lichen planus : quality and readability

2019

Background To assess the readability and quality of web-based information available for patients about oral lichen planus (OLP). Material and Methods Three major search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo!) were used to identify websites of particular interest to the study using the search term ‘oral lichen planus’. The first 100 sites of each search engine were considered for the study. The quality of the contents was evaluated using the DISCERN instrument. The Flesch-Kinkaid Reading Grade Level (FKRGL) and the Flesh Reading Ease Score (FRES) were used to assess readability. The presence of the Health on the Net (HON) seal was also evaluated. Results Following the application of the study’s ex…

Evaluating the statistical methodology of randomized trials on dentin hypersensitivity management

2017

The present study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and quality of statistical methodology used in clinical studies on dentin hypersensitivity management. An electronic search was performed for data published from 2009 to 2014 by using PubMed, Ovid/MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases. The primary search terms were used in combination. Eligibility criteria included randomized clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy of desensitizing agents in terms of reducing dentin hypersensitivity. A total of 40 studies were considered eligible for assessment of quality statistical methodology. The four main concerns identified were i) use of nonparametric tests in the presence of large samples…

From Illusion to Reality: A Brief History of Robotic Surgery.

2018

Purpose. Robotic surgery is currently employed for many surgical procedures, yielding interesting results. Methods. We performed an historical review of robots and robotic surgery evaluating some critical phases of its evolution, analyzing its impact on our life and the steps completed that gave the robotics its current popularity. Results. The origins of robotics can be traced back to Greek mythology. Different aspects of robotics have been explored by some of the greatest inventors like Leonardo da Vinci, Pierre Jaquet-Droz, and Wolfgang Von-Kempelen. Advances in many fields of science made possible the development of advanced surgical robots. Over 3000 da Vinci robotic platforms are ins…

Quality of YouTube TM videos on dental implants

2018

Background Patients search YouTube for health-care information. Purpose To examine what YouTube offers patients seeking information on dental implants, and to evaluate the quality of provided information. Material and Methods A systematic search of YouTube for videos containing information on dental implants was performed using the key words “Dental implant” and “Tooth replacement”. Videos were examined by two senior Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents who were trained and calibrated to perform the search. Initial assessment was performed to exclude non- English language videos, duplicate videos, conference lectures, and irrelevant videos. Included videos were analyzed with regard to d…

MRI of Pulmonary Ventilation

2008

Gas imaging has opened the new field of direct imaging of pulmonary ventilation by MRI. The use of hyperpolarised 3He gas for MRI of the lung has been pioneered by a number of groups worldwide. Due to the enormous progress in the fields of hyperpolarisation technology, administration of hyperpolarised 3He, MR hardware, and MR pulse sequences significant progress has been made and the translation into the clinical arena has been accomplished. This chapter gives an overview of the technical methods for HP 3He MRI for human lung imaging, focusing on gas polarisation methods, background physics, MRI hardware considerations, MRI pulse sequence considerations, safety considerations for imaging in…

Conventional Radiology in the Evaluation of the Small Bowel

2015

For many years, the small bowel has been considered as the “black box” of the gastrointestinal system because it could not be evaluated through endoscopy. For this reason, the conventional radiological methods, such as small bowel enteroclysis and small bowel follow-through, have been considered the standard approach for the evaluation of the small bowel in the diagnosis and management of Crohn’s disease for years. However, due to technological limits, the study of small bowel through conventional radiology has been focused mainly on its function than on its anatomy. To date, the conventional examination with the study of intestinal transit is now rarely used, if not obsolete, but it has st…

Advanced Endoscopic Imaging Methods

2021

Endoscopic imaging is the mainstay of gastrointestinal endoscopy and has experienced remarkable improvements in recent decades. Further endoscopic innovations stemming from major technological advances such as artificial intelligence and deep learning are at advanced stages of development and will be increasingly deployed in routine clinical practice. These will improve the detection and enable real-time optical diagnosis of pathologies in the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, the utilization of endoscopic robots may result in higher diagnostic yield and greater patient comfort. This chapter covers the most recent developments around computer-assisted diagnosis, hypoxia and three-dimensi…
