Raimondo de Puyolis: un arcivescovo catalano a Messina nel Trecento

Originario di Salses, nella diocesi di Elne, il catalano Raimondo de Puyolis fu designato arcivescovo di Messina da Clemente VI nel 1342. Nei pochi anni in cui visse nella città dello Stretto cercò di esercitare un significativo ruolo economico e politico, recuperando decime e censi ed effettuando visite pastorali. Giunto nella sua diocesi dovette fronteggiare una rivolta. Riuscì poi a ottenere la fiducia dei canonici e degli esponenti del ceto cavalleresco. Il suo testamento, ritrovato a Toledo nell'Archivo Ducal de Medinaceli, consente di ricostruirne la personalità, la consistenza patrimoniale e la biblioteca.

The estimative power has been widely discussed in modern scholarly literature. This chapter complements the existing picture by analysing medieval Latin views concerning its role as the explanans of the social behaviour of humans and other animals. Although medieval authors rarely focus on this function, the chapter shows that the estimative power plays an important explanatory role both in philosophical psychology and political philosophy.

In the Middle Age, misogyny is a characteristic of many genres and poetic types. Examples are to be found even in Greece, especially in Crete during where the Venetocracy, where the considerable Italian influence is much evident in a lot of texts, like the misogynous Ἔπαινος τῶν γυναικῶν (Praise of Women). The recognition of some motifs and the relation between images of time and space can help to understand the use of topoi by the author and the original elaboration of elements derived from others genres and traditions, like the story of “incarcerated damsel”.
