2016
The divers specialized studies of the Bréviandes watermill have yielded precise information on how the milling installation was operated and its environment. It was built with oak posts felled in 1115 AD along an ancient, silted up meander of the Seine river.the meander was re-activated after cleaning. The foundation probably served to maintain the vanes and platformsof two different mills located to either side of the channel. The millstone fragments correspond to a lower stone and three or four upper stones, two of which retained phytoliths of barley. The lifetime of this facility was probably short, because no repairs were observed following the first that appears to have provoked the co…

Lastly the ‘status’ of the exhibited objects and their mise-en-scene are examined.
1200 years of decadal-scale variability of Mediterranean vegetation and climate at Pantelleria Island, Italy.
2013
A new sedimentary sequence from Lago di Venere on Pantelleria Island, located in the Strait of Sicily between Tunisia and Sicily was recovered. The lake is located in the coastal infra-Mediterranean vegetation belt at 2 m a.s.l. Pollen, charcoal and sedimentological analyses are used to explore linkages among vegetation, fire and climate at a decadal scale over the past 1200 years. A dry period from ad 800 to 1000 that corresponds to the 'Medieval Warm Period' (WMP) is inferred from sedimentological analysis. The high content of carbonate recorded in this period suggests a dry phase, when the ratio of evaporation/precipitation was high. During this period the island was dominated by thermop…
Sources of geomaterials in the Sicani Mountains during the Early Middle Ages: A case study of Contrada Castro, central western Sicily
2022
From 2017, an unknown rural settlement in Contrada Castro at Corleone (Palermo Province, western Sicily) was investigated as part of the `Harvesting Memories Project¿. The stratigraphic sequence, supported by radiocarbon dating, has demonstrated a reoccupation of a pre-Roman site during the transition between the Byzantine and Islamic periods. In particular, the main occupation occurred in the late 8th¿9th century when pottery kilns and a probable warehouse were constructed. During the 10th¿11th century, a new structure with different orientations replaced the previous buildings that had already collapsed. Specifically focusing on a perspective of the household production and its relationsh…
We analyze the scientific production of Salvatore Fodale, based on the study of unpublished documents kept in in Italian and Spanish archives. The scholar has f…
A transcription of MS Vatican, Borgh. 129: Gualterus Burlaeus Expositio super libros Politicorum, lib. 1, tract. 1, cap. 1
2021
This is a transcription of the beginning of Walter Burley’s (c. 1275–after 1344) commentary on Aristotle’s Politics (book one, tractate one, chapter one). The transcription reproduces the text of Vatican, MS Borgh. 129, fol. 1r–148v (here fol. 2rb–6va), which has been accessed in a high quality digital reproduction in colour. The commentary has been dated between 1338/39 and 1342. The transcription includes two apparatuses. The first of them is dedicated to references, mainly to Aristotle’s Politics. The other apparatus is for critical notes, and its main function is to reproduce marginalia. The manuscript contains several corrections by another hand (marked here as V1), and since these cor…
