Healthy aging in the context of the Mediterranean diet–health-environment trilemma

Abstract Successful aging results from a lifetime of interaction between a range of factors, including those that are inherited (age, genetics), and those related to lifestyle (diet, exercise). In this brief communication, we examine the role of the Mediterranean-style diet in human health. Diet is one of the major pillars of healthy aging, and accumulating evidence supports the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet. We also discuss the lifelong effect of exposure to environmental pollution. Thus, there is an intricate relationship between health, diet and environment, which together represent a trilemma that must be addressed with a holistic, life-course, population-level approach.

The purpose of this work was to test the efficacy of three kind of different diet on some health risk factors. The primary objective of the present study was to examine the effects of diets, amount of carbohydrate intake and use of phytoextracts on weight loss, body composition and related risk factors and on metabolic values as Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) and Respiratory Ratio (RR).We tested 44 subjects randomly assigned to one of 3 groups of diet: Mediterranean (MED), Zone (ZON) and Tisanoreica® i.e. ketogenic diet plus phytoextracts (TIS). The aim of this study was to assess the effect of an MD on urinary metabolome by comparing subjects at 1 and 3 years of follow-up, after an MD supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil (MD + EVOO) or nuts (MD + Nuts), to those on advice to follow a control low-fat diet (LFD). Alcoholic Beverage and Meal Choices for the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases: A Randomized Nutrigenomic Trial

Background. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the first cause of death worldwide. Mediterranean diet may play a crucial role in the prevention of NCDs, and the presence of wine in this diet could play a positive role on health. Methods. 54 healthy volunteers consumed one of the following beverages: red (RW) or white wine (WW), vodka (VDK), and/or Mediterranean meal (MeDM) and high-fat meal (HFM). Results.
