Tidal currents in the Malta - Sicily Channel from high-frequency radar observations

Two years of sea surface current measurements acquired since August 2012 by High-Frequency SeaSonde radars over the relatively shallow shelf area dividing the Maltese Islands from Sicily (the Malta - Sicily Channel), are used to characterize the surface tidal currents in the region. Tidal currents are generally weak and concentrated in the semidiurnal and diurnal bands, barely exceeding 3cms-1 in the semidiurnal band (M2, S2), and below 6cms-1 in the diurnal band (K1, O1). Interaction between the deep fluids and the shallow groundwaters on Vulcano island (Italy)

The aim of this work is to study the interactions processes between the fluids of deep origin and the shallow groundwaters of the Vulcano Porto area. During 1995, 13 well waters were sampled three times (May, July and November) and analysed for major and some minor elements (B, Br and NH4) and for dissolved gases. The close relationship of these waters with the deep magmatic source is highlighted by the composition of the dissolved gases. Furthermore, the areal distribution of dissolved species is controlled mainly by the gas fluxes from depth and by the presence of a deeper thermal aquifer. Hinterland-Verging Thrusting in the Northern Sicily Continental Margin: Evidences for a Late Collisional Stage of the Sicilian Fold and Thrust Belt?

The Sicilian Fold and Thrust Belt developed during Neogene-Quaternary times characterized by main African-wards tectonic transport direction. Recent investigations highlighted extensive hinterland-verging tectonic structures active during late Pliocene-Pleistocene time suggesting a late collisional stage of the Sicilian Fold and Thrust Belt that could be a precursor of a change in the subduction polarity in the central belt of Mediterranean.

Abstract The Aeolian archipelago is made up of seven main islands situated in the Tyrrhenian sea (Sicily Italy). A high resolution record of the last deglaciation in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea: environmental and climatic evolution.

A multidisciplinary study was carried out on core C106 collected in the Salerno Gulf (southern Tyrrhenian Sea). Two tephra layers recovered in the core, N 18 O record of Globigerinoides ruber and Globigerina bulloides and seven 14 C calibrated ages provided the stratigraphic framework. The core sediments cover the last 28 kyr BP. Seismostratigraphic analysis of a high resolution acoustic profile, integrated by the dated core samples, allowed us to reconstruct the architecture and age of sedimentary bodies on the continental shelf. <i>Acacia cyclops</i> A. Cunn. ex G. Don (Leguminosae) in Italy: first cases of naturalization

The first two cases of naturalization of <i>Acacia cyclops</i> are reported for Italy. Young trees were observed growing in the wild some 15 years ago on Linosa (Pelagie Islands, Strait of Sicily). A decade later, this alien plant should no longer be considered as a casual, since a very intensive process of self-sown regeneration has been observed in some plantations on Lampedusa, the major island of the same Archipelago. Late Miocene sea surface salinity variability and paleoclimate conditions in the Eastern Mediterranean inferred from coral aragonite δ18O

Abstract Coral skeletons are archives of chemical proxies which enable paleoenvironmental reconstructions to be made at subannual resolution. Stable oxygen isotope ( δ 18 O) ratios of these archives reflect sea surface temperature (SST) as well as the δ 18 O composition of ambient seawater. Real-time simultaneous detection of volcanic Hg and SO2at La Fossa Crater, Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, Sicily)

Measuring Hg/SO2 ratios in volcanic emissions is essential for better apportioning the volcanic contribution to the global Hg atmospheric cycle. Here, we report the first real-time simultaneous measurement of Hg and SO2 in a volcanic plume, based on Lumex and MultiGAS techniques, respectively. We demonstrate that the use of these novel techniques allows the measurements of Hg/SO2 ratios with a far better time resolution than possible with more conventional methods. The Hg/SO2 ratio in the plume of FO fumarole on La Fossa Crater, Vulcano Island spanned an order of magnitude over a 30 minute monitoring period, but was on average in qualitative agreement with the Hg/SO2 ratio directly measured…
