Plant-herbivorous beetle networks : molecular characterization of trophic ecology within a threatened steppic environment

2015

DNA barcoding facilitates many evolutionary and ecological studies, including the examination of the dietary diversity of herbivores. In this study, we present a survey of ecological associations between herbivorous beetles and host plants from seriously threatened European steppic grasslands. We determined host plants for the majority (65%) of steppic leaf beetles (55 species) and weevils (59) known from central Europe using two barcodes (trnL and rbcL) and two sequencing strategies (Sanger for mono/oligophagous species and Illumina for polyphagous taxa). To better understand the ecological associations between steppic beetles and their host plants, we tested the hypothesis that leaf beetl…

N-Methyl-β-carboline alkaloids: structure-dependent photosensitizing properties and localization in subcellular domains

2020

N-Methyl-β-carboline (βC) alkaloids, including normelinonine F (1b) and melinonine F (2b), have been found in a vast range of living species playing different biological, biomedical and/or pharmacological roles. Despite this, molecular bases of the mechanisms through which these alkaloids would exert their effect still remain unknown. Fundamental aspects including the photosensitizing properties and intracellular internalization of a selected group of N-methyl-βC alkaloids were investigated herein. Data reveal that methylation of the βC main ring enhances its photosensitizing properties either by increasing its binding affinity with DNA as a biomolecular target and/or by increasing its oxid…

Data from: The dual role of rivers in facilitating or hindering movements of the false heath fritillary butterfly

2016

Background: Species movement responses to landscape structures have been studied using a variety of methods, but movement research is still in need of simple methods that help predicting and comparing movements across structurally different landscapes. We demonstrate how habitat-specific movement models can be used to disentangle causes of differentiated movement patterns in structurally different landscapes and to predict movement patterns in altered and artificial landscapes. In our case study, we studied the role of riparian landscapes to the persistence of the endangered false heath fritillary butterfly (Melitaea diamina) in its newly discovered coastal distribution region in Finland. Different species and symbiotic genotypes of field rhizobia can nodulate Phaseolus vulgaris in Tunisian soils.

2002

Abstract A collection of 160 isolates of rhizobia nodulating Phaseolus vulgaris in three geographical regions in Tunisia was characterized by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified 16S rDNA, nifH and nodC genes. Nine groups of rhizobia were delineated: Rhizobium gallicum biovar (bv.) gallicum, Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli and bv. viciae, Rhizobium etli bv. phaseoli, Rhizobium giardinii bv. giardinii, and four groups related to species of the genus Sinorhizobium, Sinorhizobium meliloti, Sinorhizobium medicae and Sinorhizobium fredii. The most abundant rhizobial species were R. gallicum, R. etli, and R. leguminosarum encompassing…

Epidemiological and virological studies into the poliomyelitis in Valencia (1959-1969)

2009

Studies into the polio virus began in Valencia in 1959 with the work undertaken by the microbiologist Vicente Sanchis-Bayarri Vaillant. After his education at the Rochester University and at the Pasteur Institute, Sanchis-Bayarri Vaillant established a laboratory of cell cultures at the Faculty of Medicine in Valencia, where he developed a new diagnostic technique for the poliomyelitis virus. In addition, epidemiological studies were carried out both prior to and post the 1963 vaccination campaign, which proved that Sabin’s oral vaccine was both effective and safe for use.

Three-dimensional helical computed tomography in prenatal diagnosis of fetal skeletal dysplasia

2013

Objectives (1) To study the use and diagnostic value, as a complement to ultrasound, of helical computed tomography (helical CT) to differentiate normal fetuses from cases of skeletal dysplasia; (2) to define the most relevant indications for helical CT; and (3) to evaluate its diagnostic performance with respect to radiological criteria considered discriminatory. Methods This was a retrospective study from 2005 to 2008 in 67 pregnant women who underwent helical CT after 26 weeks of gestation for suspected fetal skeletal dysplasia due to fetal shortened long bones on ultrasound (≤ 10thpercentile), either alone or associated with other bone abnormalities. The results were compared with pedia…

Women in Neurosurgery: From a Matter of Fortuitous Occasions Toward a Conscious Choice.

2021

Background Medicine has made progress toward gender equality and has achieved almost equal distribution between men and women among graduates. However, more still needs to be done because most surgical subspecialties are still lacking adequate female representation and this persisting gender gap is particularly evident in both practical neurosurgery and the academic world. Gradual advancements have enabled a few women to pursue a successful career in neurologic surgery, pairing clinical practice with mentoring and involvement in academic research. These efforts show that more needs to be done to bridge the historic and current gap, which has recently aroused increasing interest among the ne…
