The contribution of human migration to tourism: The VFR travel between the EU28 member states

2017

This study explores the correlation between human migration and that part of tourism due to people visiting friends and relatives in a foreign country. We first compared the network structure of migration stocks and tourism flows between the 28 member countries of the European Union over the period 2000–2012. Then, we performed several econometric analyses to study the main tourism determinants and the correlations between migration to tourism. The paper derives from the discussion of the results an estimate of the contribution to the overall tourism phenomenon due to visiting friends and relatives. Complex network analysis and gravity models were the investigation methods preferred.

Harnessing the biodiversity value of Central and Eastern European farmland

2015

A large proportion of European biodiversity today depends on habitat provided by low‐intensity farming practices, yet this resource is declining as European agriculture intensifies. Within the European Union, particularly the central and eastern new member states have retained relatively large areas of species‐rich farmland, but despite increased investment in nature conservation here in recent years, farmland biodiversity trends appear to be worsening. Although the high biodiversity value of Central and Eastern European farmland has long been reported, the amount of research in the international literature focused on farmland biodiversity in this region remains comparatively ti…

Measuring the market power in the ceramic tile industry: An international comparison

2004

This paper measures the degree of competition faced by Spanish and Italian exporters of ceramic tiles in several European Union member states. The results indicate that Spanish producers have a substantial market power while Italian exporters face a high degree of competition. This finding is consistent with the significant gain (loss) in the world production and export shares that Spanish (Italian) producers experienced during the 1990s. The results are also consistent with accounting data. Furthermore, comparisons in the extent of market power across source countries and European destination markets reveal that most variation in the data is related to the source country. JEL no. Employee ‘voice’ and working environment in post-communist New Member States: an empirical analysis of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

2008

This article examines employee ‘voice’ in workplace health and safety in three Baltic New Member States by means of a cross-national survey. The data point to unresolved problems of voice in the context of rather poor working environments. These present opportunities for collective renewal by trade unions, but paradoxically are more likely to be addressed by employers in the context of significant labour shortages created by a post-European Union accession labour ‘exit’.

Tourism Activity of Member States and Romania's Place within the First Five Years after EU Accession

2013

Abstract This paper is a brief statistical analysis of the evolution of tourism in the EU-27 in the first five years after Romania's accession. The analysis was based on official data published by Eurostat regarding the tourist accommodation capacity by categories, the number of arrivals and overnight stays of tourists and non-residents. I highlighted each time Romania's place within Member States, preferring graphics that are more suggestive than synthetic data tables. In conclusions I have highlighted the changes occurred in Romania, far from those expected after five years as a member of the European Union.

INCOME AND QUALITY OF LIFE INFLUENCE ON CITIZENS' PARTICIPATION IN ACTIVITIES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN LATVIA

2018

The aim of the paper is to analyse the factors influencing the citizen participation in activities of local governments in relation to quality of life in Latvia. The use of the CLEAR model, elaborated by a group of British researchers under guidance of Gerry Stoker, shows the possibilities of participation and engagement of citizens based on theoretical aspects. Latvia, as a member state of the EU, needs to develop and to involve more citizens in different social activities, since it has comparatively small experience in democratic processes due to its past of 50 years being a part of another country — the Soviet Union. The opportunities to participate in the European Parliament’s election …

Comparing the access conditions for minimum income support in four EU member states for national, EU and non-EU citizens

2019

This research analyses the conditions imposed on national, EU and non-EU citizens who wish to access minimum income (MI) benefits within four EU Member States, specifically within Finland, France, Ireland and Spain. The primary aim is to identify and compare the required MI access conditions. Furthermore, focus is given to the residence requisites, which are discussed in relation to relevant supranational regulations in order to detect possible multilevel implications. The paper concludes with the identification of different MI conditions, such as stricter age requisites in France and Spain. Moreover, the study of national cases allows for consideration of how the EU social protection floor…

Sport Clubs in Spain

2015

Spain is a decentralised state with an approximate population of 47.1 million. It is a European Union member state since 1986 and the 13th largest economy in the world. According to the latest survey of sporting habits conducted in Spain (2010), 19 % of people over the age of 15 engage in some kind of sport or physical activity through a sports club or association. The corresponding figures in previous surveys were 24 % in 2005 and 25 % in 2000. Although the number of sports clubs in Spain has increased over the last 10 years, there has been an even greater rise in the number of people taking up recreational sport or physical activity without being formally linked to any sports federation o…
