Structure and dynamics in amorphous tellurium and Te-n clusters: A density functional study
2012
Density functional/molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on amorphous tellurium (a meltquenched sample of 343 atoms at 300 K) and on Te clusters with up to 16 atoms. The former extend our calculations on liquid Te at 560, 625, 722, and 970 K [Phys. Rev. B 81, 094202 (2010)]. We discuss trends in structures (including those of other group-16 elements), electronic densities of states, and vibration frequencies. Chain structures are common in S and Se, but the chains in amorphous Te are short, and branching sites with threefold-coordinated atoms are common. The energy difference between two- and threefold local coordination depends sensitively on the exchange-correlation functiona…

Inattentional deafness under dynamic musical conditions
2009
While inattentional blindness is a modern classic in attention and perception research, analogous phenomena of inattentional deafness are less well-known. In music, inattentional deafness has never been demonstrated under controlled experimental conditions, despite of indirect evidence for related effects. We tested inattentional deafness with real music in both musicians and non-musicians. Participants listened to the first 1’50” of Richard Strauss’ Thus Spake Zarathustra, with the experimental group having the task of counting the number of tympani beats and the control group just listening. The unexpected event was an e-guitar solo during the last 20s of this sequence. In Study 1, among …
Saint Agnes of Rome, the Pope and the “Purpuresque Pavo”: Memory Issues of the Apse Mosaic of Santa Agnese fuori le mura (625-638)
2018
The theme of memory is at the heart of apse mosaic of Santa Agnese fuori le mura. It’s a visual discourse about a roman martyr linked to the founder of new basilica and the “purpuresque pavo”. With the offering of this mosaics, the pope Honorius honours Saint Agnes’s memory. Honorius reaches to blend in a complex system of commemoration. Some close links are forged between the pope and the roman martyr. A true locus memoriae was established on the Via Nomentana since the middle of the IVth century. In the dedicatory inscription, the “purpuresque pavo” reminds the sacrifice of Christ, the martyrdom of Saint Agnes and the resurrection of the Elect. Thus, Honorius left an indelible mark in Rom…
The role of religious institutions in the process of reconciliation and peacebuilding : a case study of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Ahmići, Trusina and B…
2020
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a young, post-conflict and ethnically divided country in Europe. It is well known for being the scene of a conflict centred on religious divisions. For the researcher, this raises a number of interesting questions. What is the role of religious institutions in conflict and peacebuilding? Why is religion politicised? Can religious dialogue be perceived as a factor in the process of reconciling opposing ethnic communities; in this case, Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks? A section of this article is devoted to the stories of survivors from Bosniak, Croatian and Serbian families1. Each of these three ethnic groups suffered during the massacres in Ahmići, Trusina and Bradina,…
The Light Side of Passwords : Turning Motivation from the Extrinsic to the Intrinsic
2019
There are many good and bad aspects to password authentication. They are mostly without cost, securing many accounts and systems, and allowing users access from anywhere in the world. However, passwords can elicit dark side phenomena, including security technostress; with many users feeling negatively towards them, as they struggle to cope with the sheer numbers required in their everyday lives. Much research has attempted to understand users’ interactions with passwords, examining the trade-off between security, memorability, user convenience, and suggesting techniques to manage them better. However, users continue to struggle. Many studies have shown that users are more concerned with goa…
"Kouzlo dálky" i "mechanismus kaváren a vináren" - uwagi o (nie)pamięci w korespondencji Jana Zahradníčka z Františkiem Halasem
2021
The article analyses letters exchanged in the years 1930 to 1949 between two outstanding Czech poets - Jan Zahradníček and František Halas. Despite their contrary views (Zahradníček was perceived as an ardent Catholic, while Hałas – as holding rather left-wing worldviews), their written communication is a testimony of their friendship which lasted for two decades. However, in the letters there are also expressed, especially in the final stage of their correspondence, numerous radical judgments of the thickening atmosphere (years of the war and Soviet domination) surrounding both artists as well as mutual assessments of their social and ethical attitudes. Their correspondence can be also vie…
Nie ma takiej wiedzy, która jest ostateczna. Każda stanowi przedsionek prowadzący do nowych obszarów niewiedzy. "Götz i Meyer" Davida Albahariego
2018
This article’s aim is to analyze David Albahari’s Götz and Meyer as the only Serbian literary text whose main theme is the extermination of the native Jews. The recurring key-word of the analysis is the notion of void, which appears both on the plot level and a more metaphorical one that connotes a less perceptible meaning of Albahari’s prose which can be summarized as a conviction about the insufficient memory of the Holocaust in Serbia. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate what method Albahari employs to build his story. Consequently, juxtaposing history (ostensibly objective, linked with the order of reason) with fiction proves to be here of the utmost importance. It demonstrates…
