Time estimation in Alzheimer and the role of the central executive

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of short-term memory and attention in time estimation. For this purpose we studied prospective time verbal estimation in 21 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and compared their performance with that of 21 matched normal controls in two different conditions: during a digit span task and during an attentional task. Results showed that the performance of AD patients was significantly worse than that of the controls; the interaction between group and condition was significant. We suggest a role of attentional-executive functions in prospective time estimation.

The material being presented in this paper is a study case – the analysis of an interview which the author conducted with a granddaughter of the Lemkos dis-placed to Lower Silesia in 1947 as part of Operation Vistula. The narration of the interlocutor overfilled with emotions reveals the traumatic context of her in-cessant search for an answer to the question: Who am I? Since she did not agree to make the entirety of her talk public, transferring in this way the obligation to protect her name onto the author, the interview became a unique personal ex-perience for the latter at the same time. W pracy przedstawiono zjawisko podróżowania do miejsc pamięci ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich lokalnego charakteru. Za przykład do omówienia wybrano miejsca pamięci bezpośrednio związane z grupą zawodową górników, a dokładnie poświęcone ofiarom tragicznych wydarzeń w kopalniach. W ostatnich kilku latach wzrasta wśród turystów zainteresowanie górniczymi miejscami pamięci, co ma bezpośredni związek z funkcjonowaniem ścieżki turystyczno-krajoznawczej „Śladami ofiar górniczego stanu”, która powstała z inicjatywy członków Koła Kolarskiego „Sokół” Oddziału PTTK Radlin.

Tässä pilottitutkimuksessa selvitettiin sana-assosiaatioiden koheesiota ryhmissä. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää, löytyykö yhtenäisyyttä ryhmän keskinäisen toimeen tulemisen välillä ja sen suhteen, kuinka ryhmät assosioivat sanoja. Assosiaatioiden koheesion mittaamisessa käytettiin pohjatietona muistiteorioita ja verkkoteoriaa. Koehenkilöt olivat Jyväskylän yliopistossa järjestetyn kurssin oppilaita, jotka jakaantuivat ryhmiin. Kurssin aluksi ensimmäiset assosiaatiotehtävät teetettiin oppilailla. Designing a graphics processing unit accelerated petaflop capable lattice Boltzmann solver: Read aligned data layouts and asynchronous communication

The lattice Boltzmann method is a well-established numerical approach for complex fluid flow simulations. Recently, general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs) have become available as high-performance computing resources at large scale. We report on designing and implementing a lattice Boltzmann solver for multi-GPU systems that achieves 1.79 PFLOPS performance on 16,384 GPUs. To achieve this performance, we introduce a GPU compatible version of the so-called bundle data layout and eliminate the halo sites in order to improve data access alignment. In visual working memory (VWM) tasks, participants’ performances can be improved through the use of dimension-based retro-cues, which direct internal attention to prioritize a particular dimension (e.g., color or orientation) of VWM representations even after the stimuli disappear.
