How physical activity, fitness, and motor skills contribute to math performance: Working memory as a mediating factor

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine whether physical activity, fitness and motor skills have indirect association with math performance via cognitive outcomes and if so, through which aspects of cognition? Methods This study comprised 311 6th–9th grade adolescents (12–17y [M age=14.0y], 59% girls) from seven schools throughout Finland in 2015. Math performance was measured via a teacher-rated math achievement and the Basic Arithmetic test. Cognitive functions were measured by broad cognitive test battery. Cognitive predictors of counting skills

Rote counting skills have found to be a strong predictor of later arithmetic and reading fluency. However, knowledge of the underlying cognitive factors influencing counting skill is very limited. Present study examined to what extent language skills (phonology, vocabulary, and morphology), nonverbal reasoning skills, and memory at the age of five could explain counting skill at the beginning of first grade. Vertaisarvioitu Lähtökohdat Tutkimme Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) -menetelmän soveltuvuutta varhaista Alzheimerin tautia sairastavien potilaiden ajokyvyn arviointiin. Selvitimme myös menetelmän herkkyyttä tunnistaa kognitiomuutoksia. Menetelmät Tutkimus sisälsi haastattelun, kognitiivisen arvioinnin (MoCA), ajon simulaattorilla ja oman ajamisen arvioinnin. Siihen osallistui 7 potilasta ja 17 tervettä ikätoveria. Tulokset Potilaat suoriutuivat verrokkeja heikommin MoCA-testissä ja simulaattoriajossa. Genotype determining aerobic exercise capacity associates with behavioral plasticity in middle-aged rats

Good aerobic fitness associates positively with cognitive performance and brain health and conversely, low aerobic fitness predisposes to neurodegenerative diseases. To study how genotype together with exercise, started at older age, affects brain and behavior, we utilized rats that differ in inherited aerobic fitness. Rats bred for Low Capacity for Running (LCR) are shown to display less synaptic plasticity and more inflammation in the hippocampus and perform worse than rats bred for a High Capacity for Running (HCR) in tasks requiring flexible cognition. Bei der Untersuchung dieses mediatisierten Krieges wird der Frage nachgegangen, was diese Bilderwelt über die fortschrittlichen Erwartungen, Ängste und Hoffnungen in der Weimarer Republik aussagt. Interstitial pneumonia is a life-threatening clinical manifestation of cytomegalovirus infection in recipients of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The mouse model of experimental HCT and infection with murine cytomegalovirus revealed that reconstitution of virus-specific CD8+ T cells is critical for resolving productive lung infection. CD8+ T-cell infiltrates persisted in the lungs after the establishment of latent infection.
