Oxygen parameters of blood: Definitions and symbols
1990
Definitions and symbols for relevant parameters of the oxygen status of arterial blood are recommended. The recommendations are as simple as possible, easy to understand, and devoid of misinterpretations and double meanings. The authors propose no new definitions for limited new methods, no combination of symbols and methods, and no association between definition, symbol and commercial name.

Polymorphism of Amyloid Fibrils and their Complexes with Catalase
2014
Catalase binding to amyloid fibrils has been shown for the Alzheimer’s amyloid-β (Aβ), type 2 diabetes-associated islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease-associated prion protein (PrP). Catalase targets a specific domain with a GAII-like sequence and there are a number of other amyloid fibril-forming proteins that contain related sequences, such as the Parkinson’s associated α-synuclein protein and the Huntington disease protein Huntingtin. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, interactions show specific binding of catalase to some, but not all, fibrillar forms of Aβ, IAPP and PrP fragments, allowing determination of the fibrillar forms that contain a…

Characterization of Epileptic Spiking Associated With Brain Amyloidosis in APP/PS1 Mice
2019
Epileptic activity without visible convulsions is common in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and may contribute adversely to the disease progress and symptoms. Transgenic mice with amyloid plaque pathology also display epileptic seizures, but those are too infrequent to assess the effect of anti-epileptic treatments. Besides spontaneous seizures, these mice also display frequent epileptic spiking in epidural EEG recordings, and these have provided a means to test potential drug treatment to AD-related epilepsy. However, the origin of EEG spikes in transgenic AD model mice has remained elusive, which makes it difficult to relate electrophysiology with underlying pathology at the cellular and molecul…
Teachers' attitudes and self-efficacy on implementing inclusive education in Japan and Finland: A comparative study using multi-group structural equa…
2018
Abstract This study aims to explore relationships between teachers' attitudes, self-efficacy, and background variables regarding inclusive education by using a sample of 359 Japanese and 872 Finnish teachers. A multi-group structural equation modelling was conducted to find similarities and differences in how the background variables predict teachers' attitudes and self-efficacy. Experience in teaching students with disabilities had a positive effect on teachers' attitudes and self-efficacy in both countries. However, teachers' teaching career and the amount of inclusive education training affected them differently in Japan and Finland. The findings could be used to improve inclusive educat…
Mutation Analysis of LMX1B Gene in Nail-Patella Syndrome Patients
1998
SummaryNail-patella syndrome (NPS), a pleiotropic disorder exhibiting autosomal dominant inheritance, has been studied for >100 years. Recent evidence shows that NPS is the result of mutations in the LIM-homeodomain gene LMX1B. To determine whether specific LMX1B mutations are associated with different aspects of the NPS phenotype, we screened a cohort of 41 NPS families for LMX1B mutations. A total of 25 mutations were identified in 37 families. The nature of the mutations supports the hypothesis that NPS is the result of haploinsufficiency for LMX1B. There was no evidence of correlation between aspects of the NPS phenotype and specific mutations.
Alcohol Abuse Mediates the Association between Baseline T/C Ratio and Anger Expression in Intimate Partner Violence Perpetrators.
2015
The imbalance between testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) levels has been proposed as a possible marker of risk for intimate partner violence (IPV). Moreover, it could be related to a high probability of adopting risky behaviors such as alcohol abuse which, in turn, promotes the onset of IPV. This study tested the potential mediating effect of alcohol consumption on the relationship between baseline T/C ratio and anger expression in IPV perpetrators and non-violent controls. Alcohol consumption was higher in the former than controls. A high baseline T/C ratio was only associated with high anger expression in IPV perpetrators, and this association was mediated by high alcohol consumption. Thus…
The role of music therapy in the treatment of people with intellectual disabilities suffering from mental health issues
2016
Mental health issues are more common among people with intellectual disabilities than among others. Therefore, more research is needed on this topic. The main concepts of the present study – intellectual disability, mental disorders, and music therapy – are defined. The aim of this qualitative semi-structured interview study was to discover how the mental health issues of people with intellectual disabilities affect their daily life. Furthermore, the objective was to find out, whether the mental health issues persons with intellectual disabilities suffer from could be eased by using music therapy, and what music therapy methods are used when treating this group of clients. Music therapists …
