Full scale evaluation of atmospheric mercury budget from persistent volcanic degassing

2009

In the recent years, there has been an increase in environmental concerns related to the pollution of many trace metals emitted from volcanic degassing because of their toxicity and long residence times in the earth’s ecosystems. Among volcanogenic trace elements, mercury (Hg) is one of the most environmentally-significant in light of its potential harmful effects on biological systems. At present, however, the global Hg flux from volcanic sources is still poorly known. We report on Hg levels in volcanic plumes and fumaroles that, in combination with sulphur analyses and SO2 flux data, lead to global Hg estimates. We found that mercury transport in the plume is mainly in the gas-phase, as H…

Mercury from volcanoes: fluxes and speciation

2008

Mercury is a toxic bio-accumulating metal that, due to its volatility has an extended atmospheric lifetime. Understanding Hg sources and sinks is therefore has importance on the global scale. We present new measurements of volcanic Hg from Mount Etna and Vulcano in Italy and Masaya volcano in Nicaragua to improve our estimates of the volcanic Hg flux. In contrast to other metals emitted from volcanoes, volcanic Hg can exist in 3 forms, namely gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) and in the particle phase. These measurements also represent the first fully speciated measurements of volcanic Hg, as well as the first high time resolution measurements of gaseous Hg. Vo…

Mercury and Amino Acid Content Relations in Northern Pike (Esox Lucius) in Subarctic Lakes Along a Climate-Productivity Gradient

2023

Mercury is a highly toxic element for consumers, but its relation to amino acids and physiology of wild fish is not well known. The main aim of this study was to evaluate how total mercury content (THg) of northern pike (Esox lucius) is related to amino acids and potentially important environmental and biological factors along a climate-productivity gradient of ten subarctic lakes. Linear regression between THg and sixteen amino acids content [nmol mg−1 dry weight] from white dorsal muscle of pike from these lakes were tested. Lastly, a general linear model (GLM) for age-corrected THg was used to test which factors are significantly related to mercury content of pike. There was a positive r…

Evaluation of waterborne exposure to heavy metals in innate immune defences present on skin mucus of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

2015

Aquatic animals are continuously exposed to chemical pollutants but the effects evoked in skin surfaces, which receive the most direct contact with them, are poorly investigated. Terminal carbohydrate composition and immunological components present in skin mucus of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) specimens exposed to waterborne sublethal dosages of heavy metals [arsenic (As2O3), cadmium (CdCl2) and mercury (CH3HgCl) at 5, 5 and 0.04 μM, respectively for 2, 10 and 30 days were analysed. Moreover, the presence of a fucose binding lectin (FBL) was evaluated by western blot and the protein profiles were by SDS-PAGE and HPLC. Results showed little effects of heavy metals in the presence of…

Nonlinear Absorption and Refraction of Picosecond and Femtosecond Pulses in HgTe Quantum Dot Films

2021

We report measurements of the saturated intensities, saturable absorption, and nonlinear refraction in 70-nm thick films containing 4 nm HgTe quantum dots. We demonstrate strong nonlinear refraction and saturable absorption in the thin films using tunable picosecond and femtosecond pulses. Studies were carried out using tunable laser pulses in the range of 400–1100 nm. A significant variation of the nonlinear refraction along this spectral range was demonstrated. The maximal values of the nonlinear absorption coefficients and nonlinear refractive indices determined within the studied wavelength range were −2.4 × 10−5 cm2 W−1 (in the case of 28 ps, 700 nm probe pulses) and −3 × 10−9 cm2 W−1 …
