The Monitoring and Advisory Functions of Corporate Boards

2018

The main objective of this chapter is to investigate the effects of advisory directors’ presence on the board’s overall effectiveness in value creation. To achieve this purpose, we first explore the channels through which this advisory measure influences firm value. Thus, the results suggest that the presence of at least one independent director principally committed to advising duties on the board leads to an increase in corporate innovation and a better acquisition performance. We then examine the effect of this measure on firm value. Our findings highlight that the presence of advisory directors on the board is associated with a significant increase in firm value, especially for highly i…

The France’s mobile phone market faced with the entry of the 4th operator, Free

2016

At the end of 2009, the competition authorities have granted a 4th mobile license to Free, French operator already present in the fixed telephony and the Internet. The new operator not having a good coverage, he obtained permission to sign a roaming agreement with the incumbent operator Orange, enabling Free subscribers access to the network in areas not yet covered. Given its dependence on Orange, Free can be seen as a virtual mobile operator. We use a parameter that describes the level of independence of Free and can take three possible values. At first Free is an operator totally dependent on Orange. Then, a part of the traffic of Free passes by its own network. Finally, Free is an indep…

What is the final state of a black hole merger?

2018

In this short paper we discuss the possibility of testing the nature of astrophysical black holes using the recently observed black hole mergers. We investigate the possibility that a secondary black hole is created in the merger of two astrophysical black holes and discuss potential astrophysical signatures. We point out that black hole mergers are a possible astrophysical mechanism for the creation of quantum black holes with masses close to the Planck mass.

Search for High-energy Neutrinos from Gravitational Wave Event GW151226 and Candidate LVT151012 with ANTARES and IceCube

2017

[EN] The Advanced LIGO observatories detected gravitational waves from two binary black hole mergers during their first observation run (O1). We present a high-energy neutrino follow-up search for the second gravitational wave event, GW151226, as well as for gravitational wave candidate LVT151012. We find two and four neutrino candidates detected by IceCube, and one and zero detected by ANTARES, within +/- 500 s around the respective gravitational wave signals, consistent with the expected background rate. None of these neutrino candidates are found to be directionally coincident with GW151226 or LVT151012. We use nondetection to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission …

Luminosity function for galaxy clusters

2014

AbstractWe constructed and studied the luminosity function of 6188 galaxy clusters. This was performed by counting brightness of galaxies belonging to clusters in the PF catalogue, taking galaxy data from MRSS. Our result shows that the investigated structures are characterized by a luminosity function different from that of optical galaxies and radiogalaxies (Machalski & Godłowski 2000). The implications of this result for theories of galaxy formation are briefly discussed.

The star formation activity in cosmic voids

2014

Using a sample of cosmic voids identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we study the star formation activity of void galaxies. The properties of galaxies living in voids are compared with those of galaxies living in the void shells and with a control sample, representing the general galaxy population. Void galaxies appear to form stars more efficiently than shell galaxies and the control sample. This result can not be interpreted as a consequence of the bias towards low masses in underdense regions, as void galaxy subsamples with the same mass distribution as the control sample also show statistically different specific star formation rates. This highlights the fact that g…

Exploring Mergers of Galaxy Clusters in a Cosmological Context

2010

We present results of an Eulerian Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical and N-body simulation in a ΛCDM cosmology. The simulation incorporates common cooling and heating processes, a phenomenological description of the star formation and supernovae feedback. A specific halo finder has been designed and applied in order to extract a sample of galaxy clusters directly obtained from the simulation without considering any resimulating scheme. We have studied the evolutionary history of the cluster halos, and classified them in three categories depending on the merger events they have undergone. We pay special attention to discuss the role of merger events as a source of feedback and reh…
