The article presents a critique of competition by introducing a concept called 'distinction'. Competition is thought to work as a guarantee of the fairness of meritocratic procedures (merit-based recruiting in the job market or e.g. entrance examinations). However, fairness created by competition is, even at its best, only relative. This critique is then used a part of a larger critique of the role of merit in society.

The risk of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production can be a challenge in marine land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas that can cause massive fish mortality even at low concentrations, and in addition, serious odour problems in the surroundings. It is a bacterial by-product originating from the degradation of organic matter in sulfur-rich waters such as marine waters. The article analyses the model of authoritarian meritocracy and its legitimisation on the example of the Chinese People’s Republic. In this paper we discuss on the enhancements in accuracy and computational demanding in approx- imating a function and its derivatives via Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics. The standard method is widely used nowadays in various physics and engineering applications [1],[2],[3]. However it suffers of low approximation accuracy at boundaries or when scattered data distributions are con- sidered. In this paper we discuss on some numerical behaviors of the method. Some variants of the process are analyzed and results on the accuracy and the computational demanding, dealing with different sets of data and bivariate functions, are proposed.
Quadrature domains for the Helmholtz equation with applications to non-scattering phenomena

In this paper, we introduce quadrature domains for the Helmholtz equation. We show existence results for such domains and implement the so-called partial balayage procedure. We also give an application to inverse scattering problems, and show that there are non-scattering domains for the Helmholtz equation at any positive frequency that have inward cusps.
