1987
A series of thermotropic poly(1,4-phenylene-2,5-di-n-alkoxy terephthalate)s with the length of the n-alkoxy side chains being varied between n = 2 and n = 18 carbon atoms has been examined by optic...

One-Dimensional Iron(II) Compounds Exhibiting Spin Crossover and Liquid Crystalline Properties in the Room Temperature Region
2008
A novel series of 1D Fe(II) metallomesogens have been synthesized using the ligand 5-bis(alkoxy)- N-(4 H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzamide (C n -tba) and the Fe(X) 2. sH 2O salts. The polymers obey the general formula [Fe(C n -tba) 3](X) 2. sH 2O [X = CF 3SO 3 (-), BF 4 (-); n = 4, 6, 8, 10, 12]. The derivatives with n = 4, 6 exhibit spin transition behavior like in crystalline compounds, whereas those with n = 8, 10, 12 present a spin transition coexisting with the mesomorphic behavior in the room-temperature region. A columnar mesophase has been found for the majority of the metallomesogens, but also a columnar lamellar mesophase was observed for other derivatives. [Fe(C 12-tba) 3](CF 3SO 3) 2…
Photophysical Properties of Discotic Dibenzopyrenes
1997
Abstract The photophysical properties of three discogenic dibenzopyrenes substituted by eight pentyloxy (O5DPB), heptyloxy (O7DBPP) or decyloxy (O10DBP) side chains are studied in solution and thin films. It is shown that the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the columnar mesophases are clearly distinguishable from those of the corresponding crystalline phases, allowing the study of phase transitions. Thus, it is found that the shorter the lateral chain length, the slower the crystallisation process. For O5DBP, the supercooled mesophase is stable over a period of at least one year; it crystallises after cooling below the glassy transition. Such a behaviour gives rise to temperature con…
3,5-Dialkoxy Substituted Triphenyl-tristriazolotriazines: Fluorescent Discotic Liquid Crystals
2015
Tristriazolotriazines with a threefold 3,5-dialkoxyphenyl substitution were prepared from the corresponding phenyltetrazoles and cyanuric chloride. These star-shaped compounds are discotic liquid crystals that form broad and stable thermotropic mesophases. The thermal behaviour was studied by DSC and polarizing optical microscopy. An increasing length of the side chains reduces the phase transition temperatures, this effect is more pronounced for the crystalline to mesophase transition than for the clearing temperature. XRD on an oriented sample revealed a hexagonal columnar structure for the mesophase. All TTTs emit a strong fluorescence in the UV-violet region.
Molecular dynamics in liquid crystalline N-acylated oligoethylenimines as studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy
1996
The molecular dynamics and the charge transport in six liquid crystalline N-acylated oligoethylenimines were investigated by dielectric spectroscopy. The dielectric spectra in the temperature range from 125 K up to 400 K and in the frequency range between 10 -2 Hz and 10 7 Hz could be described by a conductivity contribution and three relaxation processes. The molecular assignment of the α-process is a relaxation of the rigid benzamide unit. Its mean relaxation time is influenced by the length of the alkoxy side chains, the spacer length (ethylene or propylene groups) and the neighboring repeating units. In the columnar mesophase this process is cooperative due to sterical hindrance. A norm…
Optical suppression of ferroelectricity in polysiloxane copolymers with chiral and photochromic side groups
1998
The ferroelectricity of surface-stabilized aligned films of polysiloxane copolymers containing chiral esters and photochromic azobenzene moieties within the side groups is suppressed on UV irradiation and is rebuilt on visible irradiation. The liquid crystalline polymer (Sc* 64 SA 80 i) shows ferroelectric behavior below 64°C. The photoinduced modification of supramolecular order and the corresponding changes in its dynamics are studied by polarized UV/vis spectroscopy and broad band dielectric spectroscopy (10−2–105 Hz). The dielectric measurements show that UV irradiation causes a loss of ferroelectricity within an interval of 10 K below the phase transition temperature. The photochemical…
Thermotropic polyesters with mesogenic groups based on substituted hydroquinone units and highly flexible siloxan spacer in the main chain
1984
New thermotropic Polyesters having mesogenic groups based on substituted hydroquinone units and highly flexible oligosiloxan spacer in the main chain, are synthesized and characterized. The mesophase formed at low temperature are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy. The liquid crystalline behaviour of these polyesters, particulary their transition temperatures and the mesophase width could be explained on the basis of their structural features.
1991
It is shown that the acceptor polyesters [(CH 2 ) x OCOC(=R) COO(CH 2 ) x ] n (R=9-[2,4,7-trinitrofluorenylidene]) x=3, 6, 8) influence the chain behaviour of the discotic hexapentyloxytriphenylene without changing the phase type (D ho ). The clearing temperature of the complexes has a maximum value when x=G. Both intra- and intercolumnar distance are smaller than in the pure discotic compound and independant of the spacer
Mesophase formation in poly(propylene-ran-1-butene) by rapid cooling
2009
Abstract The effect of random insertion of low amount of 1-butene of less than about 11 mol% into the isotactic polypropylene chain on structure formation at non-isothermal crystallization at different rate of cooling was investigated by X-ray scattering, density measurements, and atomic force and polarizing optical microscopy. Emphasis is put on the evaluation of the condition of crystallization for replacement of lamellar crystals by mesomorphic nodules on increasing the cooling rate/supercooling. In the polypropylene homopolymer, mesophase formation occurs on cooling at rates larger about 150–200 K s −1 , while in case of poly(propylene- ran -1-butene) mesophase formation is observed on …
