Performance of industrial scale hollow-fibre membranes in a submerged anaerobic MBR (HF-SAnMBR) system at mesophilic and psychrophilic conditions

2013

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of temperature on the performance of industrial hollow-fibre (HF) membranes treating urban wastewater in a submerged anaerobic MBR system (SAnMBR). To this end, a demonstration plant with two commercial HF ultrafiltration membrane modules (PURON®, Koch Membrane Systems, PUR-PSH31) was operated at 20, 25 and 33 °C. The mixed liquor total solid (MLTS) level was a key factor affecting membrane permeability (K). K was higher under psychrophilic than mesophilic conditions when operating at similar transmembrane fluxes and MLTS, because the biomass activity of the psychrophilic mixed liquor was lower than the mesophilic mixed liquor. Thus, lower ext…

Influence of the initial acidification step on biogas production and composition

2014

Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of initial acidification of feedstock consisting of different components on biogas production and composition. Feedstock containing different agricultural wastes, biomass, and microorganisms was collected from five full-scale biogas plants. Two continuously stirred tank reactors were used. The fermentation temperature was 37 °C. The pH value was adjusted to 6.0 in the first reactor at the beginning of the experiment, and an initial pH value of 7.0 was implemented after 48 H. The second reactor was used as a control reactor with a constant pH of 7.0. The experiment lasted a total of 7 days. In the reactors, the gas phase wa…

Biodeterioration of cardboard-based liquid containers collected for fibre reuse.

1999

Liquid packaging board (LPB) collected in Germany is processed in Finland as recycled fibre and as plastic reject for incineration. The chemical, biological and physical changes occurring in recycled LPB bales were monitored during storage of six and 18 months. The moisture content in the core of the bales ranged from 7% to 53%, and pH values varied from 6.0 to 8.5. The average amount of mesophilic bacteria per container was 1.5 x 10(7) - 5 x 10(8), which means that recycled LPB pulp cannot be recommended for sanitary use. The concentration of CO2 inside the bale is an indicator of the activity of aerobic microorganisms and might be suitable for identifying deteriorated bales and removing t…

Microbial analysis of raw cows' milk used for cheese-making: influence of storage treatments on microbial composition and other technological traits

2010

Raw milk used to produce Grana cheese was subjected to several treatment regimes, including varying temperatures and storage times. Milk from morning and evening milking were transferred to a dairy factory sepa- rately (double delivery) or together (single delivery), after storage at the farm for 12 h; in the former case, milk was stored at 12 or 8°C, whereas, in the latter, it was kept at ambient temperature or 18°C. Values of pH of the vat milk were lower for milk samples kept at room temperature, while other physico-chemical parameters and rheological characteristics tested did not show significant differ- ences linked to the different storage temperatures of milk used for ‘‘Grana Trenti…

Regulating feeding and increasing methane yield from co-digestion of C5 molasses and cattle manure

2014

Abstract The paper investigated the mesophilic (∼35 °C) and thermophilic (∼50 °C) co-digestion of cattle manure and C5 molasses for a variable organic loading rate (OLR). The small scale continuous reactor experiment revealed that thermophilic treatment yielded a maximum 313 ± 16 L/kg VS methane for the feeding ranged between 50% and 70% C5 (v/v). Mesophilic co-digestion, on the other hand, produced maximum 232 ± 32 L/kg VS methane when feeding was ranged between 31% and 47% C5 (v/v). The feeding strategy of this study was sophistically adjusted owing to the unstable volatile fatty acids (VFA) pattern, developed at different stages of the experiment. Attainable molasses feeding for both the…

Ethylbenzene removal under mesophilic conditions in a biofilter withMacadamia ternifolianutshells as a carrier material

2012

BACKGROUND Biofilters are suitable to treat industrial emissions polluted with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), responsible for photochemical smog and depletion of the ozone layer. This study analyzes the performance of a biofilter with Macadamia ternifolia nutshells as a carrier material treating air streams contaminated with ethylbenzene under mesophilic conditions with continuous feeding. RESULTS The biofilter was operated continuously for 5 months applying several inlet loads (IL), empty bed residence times (EBRT) and temperatures. At a temperature of 303 ± 1 K removal efficiencies (RE) higher than 90% were obtained for ILs lower than 85.6 g m−3 h−1 and 70.6 g m−3 h−1 at an EBRT of 15…

One-stage H2 and CH4 and two-stage H2+ CH4 production from grass silage and from solid and liquid fractions of NaOH pre-treated grass silage

2009

Abstract In the present study, mesophilic CH4 production from grass silage in a one-stage process was compared with the combined thermophilic H2 and mesophilic CH4 production in a two-stage process. In addition, solid and liquid fractions separated from NaOH pre-treated grass silage were also used as substrates. Results showed that higher CH4 yield was obtained from grass silage in a two-stage process (467 ml g−1 volatile solids (VS)original) compared with a one-stage process (431 ml g−1 VSoriginal). Similarly, CH4 yield from solid fraction increased from 252 to 413 ml g−1 VSoriginal whereas CH4 yield from liquid fraction decreased from 82 to 60 ml g−1 VSoriginal in a two-stage compared to …

Influence of variable feeding on mesophilic and thermophilic co-digestion of Laminaria digitata and cattle manure

2014

Abstract In this study the effect of various feeding ratios on mesophilic (∼35 °C) and thermophilic (∼50 °C) co-digestion of brown algae Laminaria digitata and cattle manure was investigated. Algae input of 15% VS caused no influence on specific methane yield from mesophilic co-digester while deteriorated the process parameters such as the development of propionic acid in total volatile fatty acids (tVFA) pattern of the thermophilic co-digester. The accumulation of tVFA continued for the latter reactor as the feeding ratio of algae enhanced to 24% VS, but the specific methane yield improved dramatically. Same rise in feeding once again showed no improvement in specific methane yield from me…

Effects of adding solid and molten chocolate on the physicochemical, antioxidant, microbiological, and sensory properties of ewe's milk cheese.

2020

Abstract: A novel dairy product, namely “chocolate cheese”, was produced with two typical Sicilian food products: Pecorino cheese, processed from ewe's milk, and Modica chocolate. The cheese, manufactured with 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% (w/w) solid or molten chocolate, was evaluated after 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks of vacuum storage for its nutritional and health properties. The addition of chocolate reduced the pH, protein, fat, and ash; the addition of 5% or 10% molten chocolate reduced hardness (N/mm2). The addition of either solid or molten chocolate resulted in a slight increase (P < 0.1038) in the total polyphenol content, a higher oleic acid content, and less oxidative stability. The microbio…
