Spherical silica agglomerates possessing hierarchical porosity prepared by spray drying of MCM-41 and MCM-48 nanospheres

2003

Hierarchically ordered porous materials possessing both meso- and macropores can be obtained by agglomeration of spherical primary particles of mesoporous MCM-41 and MCM-48 materials using the spray drying technique. A highly interconnected bimodal pore network is obtained due to the intra- and inter-particle pore systems within the micron-sized spherical agglomerates. Further packing of the agglomerates will result in a three-modal hierarchical pore system, where the first level of porosity originates from the ordered mesopores inside the primary particles, the second level is a result of the particle internal porosity, and the third level is due to the voids between the agglomerates. The …

Pore structural characteristics, size exclusion properties and column performance of two mesoporous amorphous silicas and their pseudomorphically tra…

2007

Highly ordered mesoporous silicas such as, mobile composition of matter, MCM-41, MCM-48, and the SBA-types of materials have helped to a large extent to understand the formation mechanisms of the pore structure of adsorbents and to improve the methods of pore structural characterization. It still remains an open question whether the high order, the regularity of the pore system, and the narrow pore size distribution of the materials will lead to a substantial benefit when these materials are employed in liquid phase separation processes. MCM-41 type 10 microm beads are synthesized following the route of pseudomorphic transformation of highly porous amorphous silicas. Highly porous silicas a…

Scale-up low-cost synthesis of bimodal mesoporous silicas

2005

Porous pure and doped silicas with pore sizes at two length scales (meso/macroporous) have been prepared through a large scale one-pot surfactant assisted reproducible procedure by using a simple template agent and starting from non-expensive sodium silicate as silicon source. Together with the relative low-cost of the reagents we have used, the simplicity of this method, which moreover is scalable and provides high yields, could be a strong argument for considering its suitability for the production of bimodal porous silicas. Additionally, we present a simple chemical scheme that allows directing the synthesis towards different related materials including both bimodal nanoparticulated meso…

The synthesis of matrices of embedded semiconducting nanowires.

2004

In this work we report how single crystal nanowires can be assembled into regular arrays using mesoporous thin films to define the architecture. Mesoporous thin films were prepared by a sol-gel method. These provide films of very regular structure and dimensions. The films produced in this way have almost single crystal like structures and can also exhibit strong epitaxy to the underlying silicon substrate. The films are subjected to a supercritical fluid (SCF) environment in which a precursor is decomposed to yield nanowires of metals, semiconductors or oxides. Using these SCF conditions, pore filling is complete and the products are nanowires which are single crystals and structurally ali…

Hierarchical porous carbon with designed pore architecture and study of its adsorptive properties

2010

Abstract Ordered mesoporous carbon nanoparticles have been synthesized by a nanocasting procedure from furfuryl alcohol impregnation into alumino–silica UVM-7 material. By a proper adjustment of the synthesis parameters, furfuryl alcohol volume vs . template pore volume, it was possible to obtain a carbonaceous templated material which keeps the hierarchical bimodal porosity of the silica together with its high surface area (>1000 m 2 /g), as it was confirmed by means of electron transmission microscopy and N 2 adsorption isotherms. This carbon material was evaluated by testing it as a sorbent for several pesticides in aqueous solutions. Its absorption efficiency was compared with typical c…

ZnO nanoparticles embedded in UVM-7-like mesoporous silica materials: Synthesis and characterization

2009

Abstract ZnO nanodomains embedded in bimodal mesoporous silica (UVM-7) materials with high Zn content (4≤Si/Zn≤30) have been synthesized by an one-pot surfactant-assisted procedure from a hydro alcoholic medium using a cationic surfactant (CTMABr=cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) as structural directing agent, and starting from molecular atrane complexes of Zn and Si as hydrolytic inorganic precursors. This chemical procedure allows optimizing the dispersion of the ZnO particles in the silica walls. The bimodal mesoporous nature of the final high surface area nano-sized materials is confirmed by XRD, TEM, and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The small intra-particle mesopore system is due …

Very high titanium content mesoporous silicas

2001

Titanium content in mesoporous titanosilicate catalysts has been modulated up to a minimum Si/Ti value of 1.9 by using complexing agents able to coordinate both Si and Ti atoms and harmonize the reactivity of the resulting precursors avoiding subsequent phase segregation and leading to chemically very homogeneous materials.
