Prognostic implications of extranodal extension in node-positive squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2016

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the vulva is the fourth most common gynecological cancer, usually staged with the TNM or FIGO systems. Since 2009, FIGO staging has taken the extranodal extension (ENE) of lymph node metastases into account. ENE is defined as the spread of a lymph node metastasis into surrounding soft tissue. Although the TNM and FIGO systems acknowledge the importance of ENE in SCC, no comprehensive studies have analyzed the prognostic impact of this parameter. We therefore queried the PubMed and SCOPUS databases from their inception up until 04/01/2015, adopting no language restrictions: all prospective studies reporting on prognostic parameters in patients with vulvar SCC…

What can platinum offer yet in the treatment of PS2 NSCLC patients? A systematic review and meta-analysis

2015

Abstract: Background: Randomized phase III trials showed interesting, but conflicting results, regarding the treatment of NSCLC, PS2 population. This meta-analysis aims to review all randomized trials comparing platinum-based doublets and single-agents in NSCLC PS2 patients. Materials and methods: Data from all published randomized trials, comparing efficacy and safety of platinum-based doublets to single agents in untreated NSCLC, PS2 patients, were collected. Pooled ORs were calculated for the 1-year Survival-Rate (ly-SR), Overall Response Rate (ORR), and grade 3-4 (G3-4) hematologic toxicities. Results: Six eligible trials (741 patients) were selected. Pooled analysis showed a significan…

PMS2: a potential prognostic protein marker in oral squamous cell carcinoma

2020

Background An increase in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cases was observed despite the reduction in exposure to classic risk factors. Although the exact cause of this trend remains unknown, epigenetic factors could be contributing to an increased occurrence of these tumors. This study aims to assess the influence of PMS2 protein immunoexpression on the prognosis of patients with OSCC. Material and Methods This study comprised 76 cases of OSCC treated between 2011 and 2016. Immunohistochemical staining for PMS2 was performed. For evaluation, 10 fields per histological section were photographed at a 400x magnification and positively-stained cells were counted with Image J. Mann-Whitney …

A Pooled Analysis of Extremely Low-Frequency Magnetic Fields and Childhood Brain Tumors

2010

Pooled analyses may provide etiologic insight about associations between exposure and disease. In contrast to childhood leukemia, no pooled analyses of childhood brain tumors and exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) have been conducted. The authors carried out a pooled analysis based on primary data (1960–2001) from 10 studies of ELF-MF exposure and childhood brain tumors to assess whether the combined results, adjusted for potential confounding, indicated an association. The odds ratios for childhood brain tumors in ELF-MF exposure categories of 0.1–<0.2 μT, 0.2–<0.4 μT, and ≥0.4 μT were 0.95 (95% confidence interval: 0.65, 1.41), 0.70 (95% CI: 0.40, 1.22), and 1.1…

From palliation to cure: PIPAC for peritoneal malignancies

2019

Introduction Systemic chemotherapy offers poor control over peritoneal disease, maybe as a consequence of restricted drug availability within the abdominal cavity. Locoregional chemotherapy may overcome these shortcomings but its administration is limited to a few patients with confined peritoneal spread. Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) emerged in the last years as a novel method of intraperitoneal drug administration. Evidence acquisition We report a meta-analysis of published studies on PIPAC safety and pathological anti-tumoral efficacy on PC from various tumor entities, with the aim of providing more evidence to support further research. This systematic review a…

Risk of pancreatic malignancy and mortality in branch-duct IPMNs undergoing surveillance: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2016

Abstract Background Safety of non-operative management for low-risk branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (BD-IPMNs) is debated. Aim To perform a systematic review/meta-analysis to determine their risk of developing pancreatic malignancy and of pancreatic malignancy-related deaths. Methods A MEDLINE search was performed and methodology was based on PRISMA statement. Incidence rates of overall pancreatic malignancy, malignant BD-IPMN, IPMN-distinct PDAC, and of pancreatic malignancy-related death rates were calculated by dividing the total number of events by the total number of person-years (pyrs) of follow-up. Heterogeneity was determined by I2 statistic. Results 20 studies …
