Menopause modulates the circulating metabolome: evidence from a prospective cohort study
2022
Abstract Aims We studied the changes in the circulating metabolome and their relation to the menopausal hormonal shift in 17β-oestradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone levels among women transitioning from perimenopause to early postmenopause. Methods and results We analysed longitudinal data from 218 Finnish women, 35 of whom started menopausal hormone therapy during the study. The menopausal transition was monitored with menstrual diaries and serum hormone measurements. The median follow-up was 14 months (interquartile range: 8–20). Serum metabolites were quantified with targeted nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomics. The model results were adjusted for age, follow-up duration, educat…
Induction of new metabolites from sponge-associated fungus Aspergillus carneus by OSMAC approach.
2018
Abstract A comparative study on the metabolic profile of the sponge-associated fungus Aspergillus carneus using the OSMAC approach was conducted. The fungal strain was fermented on three different media including solid rice medium with or without sea salt and modified Czapek medium. Three new natural products, isopropylchaetominine (1), isoterrelumamide A (2) and 5′-epi-averufanin (3), together with fourteen known compounds (4–17) were isolated. The structures of the new compounds were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis as well as by HRESIMS. Compound 2 was only found when the fungus was cultivated on modified Czapek medium, whereas compounds 4, 7, 11, 12, and 14 were only …
1H NMR-based metabolic profiling for evaluating poppy seed rancidity and brewing
2015
Poppy seeds are widely used in household and commercial confectionery. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the application of metabolic profiling for industrial monitoring of the molecular changes which occur during minced poppy seed rancidity and brewing processes performed on raw seeds. Both forms of poppy seeds were obtained from a confectionery company. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) was applied as the analytical method of choice together with multivariate statistical data analysis. Metabolic fingerprinting was applied as a bioprocess control tool to monitor rancidity with the trajectory of change and brewing progressions. Low molecular weight compounds were found to be…
Effects of post-workout supplements and resistance training on serum metabolome, muscle strength and muscle hypertrophy
2017
Human metabolism is a complex mixture of different metabolites and metabolic pathways that are interrelated. Compared to standard biomarker assessments, metabolomics gives a broader perspective of the whole ensemble thus deepening the understanding of human physiology and pathophysiology. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of the effects of different post-exercise supplementation regimens and different resistance training programs on serum metabolome and resistance training adaptations. 60 healthy men volunteers (mean ± SD: age 32.6±6.7 y; height 1.80±0.1 m; weight 82.8±10.4 kg and BMI 25.5±3.0 kg/m2) were included in the study. All the participants went through a…
The Mediterranean diet, plasma metabolome, and cardiovascular disease risk.
2020
Abstract Aims To investigate whether metabolic signature composed of multiple plasma metabolites can be used to characterize adherence and metabolic response to the Mediterranean diet and whether such a metabolic signature is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Methods and results Our primary study cohort included 1859 participants from the Spanish PREDIMED trial, and validation cohorts included 6868 participants from the US Nurses’ Health Studies I and II, and Health Professionals Follow-up Study (NHS/HPFS). Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using a validated Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), and plasma metabolome was profiled by liquid chromatogr…
Not all women diagnosed with PCOS share the same cardiovascular risk profiles
2009
Although definitive and confirmatory data are lacking, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are considered to be at increased risk for cardiovascular and metabolic disease. In recent years, the diagnosis of PCOS has broadened considerably to result in several phenotypes. Here we review the evidence for cardiovascular and metabolic risks in PCOS in the classic disorder and the various phenotypes. We conclude that not all women with PCOS should be considered as being similar in terms of cardiovascular risk profiles.
