An active inference and epistemic value view of metacognition

2015

Metacognition concerns our monitoring and control of mental operations (knowing what you know). Much thinking about metacognition is liable to fall foul of the classic homunculus problem: Nobody can specify who or what does the "metacognition." We describe how the Active Inference and Epistemic Value (AIEV) model offers an operationalization of epistemic behaviors which can explain two example metacognitive phenomena: Control and monitoring of word learning, and the search for unretrieved information in the feeling of knowing. Curiosity drives a search forward, but it is held in check by considering the utility of what is retrieved from memory.

Associations between private speech, behavioral self-regulation, and cognitive abilities

2014

We examined the associations between 5-year-old children’s private speech, behavioural self-regulation, and cognitive abilities. Behavioural self-regulation was assessed using parental and preschool teacher questionnaires. Cognitive abilities (i.e., language, inhibition, planning and fluency, and memory) were assessed with neurocognitive tests, and the effectiveness of private speech (i.e., whether the child performs better when using speech than when not using speech) with the Hammer Task. About 43% of the children used private speech spontaneously, and about 76% performed better on the Hammer Task when they used speech. Associations between behavioural self-regulation and speech effectiv…

Skillful Internet Reader is Metacognitively Competent

2009

The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelations between information searching, textprocessing, information evaluation, and metacognition when upper-secondary school students are using Internet as a source for an essay. Students (n = 24) were asked to search for source material from the Internet in order to write an essay on a given topic. They were asked to verbalize their thoughts while they were gathering their source material. Their verbalizations and actions were recorded and analyzed. The results indicated that students who had difficulties in locating relevant information had to monitor their orientation and keep track of what to do next. Skillful students, in contrast…

Development of 4Cs, Deeper Learning and Metacognitive Strategies

2020

Creativity, Critical thinking, Collaboration and Communication are four of the key components of 21st century learning. The 4Cs approach aims to promote autonomous and confident learners through what is often described as a noticing and questioning pedagogy. This is because the core of the 4Cs approach enables the learner to take ownership of their learning. This is encouraged by teachers through pedagogy that heightens an awareness in close observation and critical reflection. Students are encouraged to take notice of and responsibility for their behaviors. What’s new in the 21st century is the call for education systems to emphasize and develop these competencies in explicit and intention…

Metacognition in primary school: using digital rubric to promote thinking and learning

2012

Research about metacognition and its implications for learning and instruction have become a central issue in education. The call for teaching metacognitive skills is considered one of the main implications for instruction that has emerged from over three decades of research about how people learn. A method to promote the development of metacognition in pupils is to ask them to assess their own work. Pupils who assess their own work will spot areas that need improvement. A rubric is a scoring tool that lays out specific expectations. Moreover this assessment tool conveys effective feedback and promotes student learning and self-assessment. Few of the existing research efforts have focused o…

Developmental Dynamics of Math Performance From Preschool to Grade 2.

2004

This study investigated the developmental dynamics of mathematical performance during children's transition from preschool to Grade 2 and the cognitive antecedents of this development. 194 Finnish children were examined 6 times according to their math performance, twice during each year across a 3-year period. Cognitive antecedents, that is, counting ability, visual attention, metacognitive knowledge, and listening comprehension, were tested at the first measurement point. The results indicated that math performance showed high stability and increasing variance over time. Moreover, the growth of math competence was faster among those who entered preschool with an already high level of mathe…

Learning through video blogs

2019

Previous research have found evidences of both, low traditional literacy skills (e.g. reading) and low digital literacy skills (computers and Internet skills) in the population of young students with intellectual disabilities ID). The main goal of this study was to test if learning content in the Internet was enhanced or interfered by video blog presentation mode for this population. In particular, we explored the metacognitive deficit hypothesis by Ackerman & Goldsmith [1] which predicts that a) monitoring accuracy (difference between predicted and actual comprehension) will be lower in videos than in texts; b) restudy decisions will be more efficient in the text medium (i.e. higher restud…

Quality of Life, Cognition, and Social Cognition in Schizophrenia

2016

Nowadays, the main objective in treating patients with schizophrenia (SZ) is not only to attain and maintain symptomatic remission, in order to reach recovery, but also to avoid relapses and reach a level of personal and social functioning, as well as of quality of life (QoL), as near as possible to that of the general population (Hasan et al. 2013). In that sense, psychosocial functioning and QoL are increasingly recognized as important treatment outcomes in SZ (Juckel and Morosini 2008; Remington et al. 2010; Figueira and Brissos 2011).
