Study of tritium and helium generation and release from lead-lithium eutectics Li15.7Pb under neutron irradiation

2019

Abstract This paper describes the experiments on study of tritium and helium generation and release processes from lead-lithium eutectics Li15.7Pb. The irradiation was performed at the IVG.1M research reactor at 6 MW of thermal power. The irradiation temperature increased step by step from 225 to 550 °C. A qualitative assessment of the experimental results showed that as the temperature rises above 390 °C, the tritium flux from the sample consisting of T2 and HT molecules decreases. It was concluded that the observed effect is similar to the previously observed one for lead-lithium eutectics with Li17Pb83 composition.

Early-stage detection of surface stress corrosion cracking at the subgranular level

2014

The strain field at the interface between an alloy and its oxide layer has been mapped using nanopatterned gauges resistant to the environment of the primary nuclear medium. It was found that oxidation has decreased the alloy ductility, thereby enabling some grain boundary opening to be detectable from 1.8 % strain. It is shown that statistics of extreme rare events of hotspots quantify the occurrence of the local opening of intergranular cracks, and thereby the ageing process.

Local analysis of the mechanical behaviour of inclusions-containing stainless steels under straining conditions

2003

Abstract A numerical method is described for determining the surface stress distribution under straining conditions from the real microstructure of materials containing local heterogeneities. The method is applied to resulfurized steels with a high density of MnS and oxide inclusions. The results are compared to those obtained from surface observations.

Studies of TiO2 Ceramics Structure after Thermal Treatment at Different Conditions

2014

The present work describes results of investigation of structural characteristics of TiO2 ceramics, depending on temperature and thermal treatment conditions by using a variety of characterization techniques. TiO2 ceramics was prepared by extrusion method and developed as a material for electrodes for innovative water treatment technologies. It was shown that non-stoichiometric phase TiO1.95 was observed after thermal treatment of TiO2 ceramics under high vacuum conditions.

Mode I failure modeling of friction stir welding joints

2008

This paper analyzes mechanical response by finite element method up to the decohesion failure in fracture mode I for joints of friction stir welding (FSW) of an aluminum alloy. It first describes experimental investigations on specimens with FSW embedded, subjected to uniform traction and local punch tests used to characterize local elastic and plastic material parameters. The heterogeneity of the mechanical properties induced by the FSW process is taken into account for the elastic-plastic finite element simulation. The growing damage and the opening failure of the welding zone are described by the adoption of a cohesive interface model with specific mechanical properties.

Analysis of Material Formability in Incremental Forming

2002

Abstract Incremental forming is an innovative sheet metal forming technology in which a blank is plastically deformed through the progressive action of a small-size punch, whose movement is governed by a CNC machine. In this way the tool locally deforms the material through an almost pure stretching deformation mechanics. The paper is focused on material formability in incremental forming. Several tests were developed, aimed to the achievement of different straining conditions in the material and consequently to the determination of Forming Limit Diagrams for progressive forming operations. The features and the application of such FLD are discussed in the paper.
