Metal stresses modify soluble proteomes and toxin profiles in two Mediterranean strains of the distributed dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum
2022
WOS:000789651000009; HABs involving Alexandrium pacificum have been reported in metal-contaminated ecosystems, suggesting that this distributed species adapts to and/or can tolerate the effects of metals. Modifications in soluble proteomes and PST contents were characterized in two Mediterranean A. pacificum strains exposed to mono- or polymetallic stresses (zinc, lead, copper, cadmium). These strains were isolated from two anthropized locations: Santa Giusta Lagoon (Italy, SG C10-3) and the Tarragona seaport (Spain, TAR C5-4F). In both strains, metals primarily downregulated key photosynthesis proteins. Metals also upregulated other proteins involved in photosynthesis (PCP in both strains)…
Toxicogenomics for the prediction of toxicity related to herbs from traditional Chinese medicine.
2010
Toxicogenomics represents the integration of genomics and toxicology to investigate the interaction between genes and environmental stress in human health. It is a scientific field that studies how the genome is involved in responses to environmental stressors and toxicants. The patterns of altered gene expression that are caused by specific exposures or disease outcomes reveal how toxicants may act and cause disease. Nowadays, toxicogenomics faces great challenges in discriminating the molecular basis of toxicity. We do believe that advances in this field will eventually allow us to describe all the toxicological interactions that occur within a living system. Toxicogenomic responses of a …
Dependence of enzyme reaction mechanism on protonation state of titratable residues and QM level description: lactate dehydrogenase
2005
We have studied the dependence of the chemical reaction mechanism of L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) on the protonation state of titratable residues and on the level of the quantum mechanical (QM) description by means of hybrid quantum-mechanical/molecular-mechanical (QM/MM) methods; this methodology has allowed clarification of the timing of the hydride transfer and proton transfer components that hitherto had not been possible to state definitively. Regioselective C–H amination of free base porphyrins via electrogenerated pyridinium-porphyrins and stabilization of easily oxidized amino-porphyrins…
2020
Four free base aminoporphyrins were synthesized in two steps via regioselective anodic nucleophilic substitution with pyridine followed by ring opening of the electrogenerated pyridinium with piperidine. The X-ray crystallographic structure of the unstable 2-aminotetraphenylporphyrin was solved. Protonation of this latter compound leads to the stable diiminium porphyrin salt.
Sol-gel produced humidity sensor
1993
Abstract The sol-gel produced polycrystalline Prussian Blue thick films as planar humidity sensors have been investigated by impedance spectroscopy. The equivalent circuit used allows simulation in all the investigated r.h. range (10–100%). The region of changes of sample resistance is about five orders, which is enough for high measuring sensitivity.
Spin polarization in electrodeposited thin films of the molecule-based magnetic semiconductor Cr5.5(CN)12·11.5H2O
2013
The magnetoresistance (MR) effect of thin films of the Prussian Blue Analogue (PBA) Cr5.5(CN)12·11.5H2O, prepared by electrochemical deposition, has been measured using the standard two-point probe method. This molecule-based ferrimagnetic material, with a Tc = 240 K, exhibits MR up to 2% at 6 T and 200 K.
Induction of stress proteins in human endothelial cells by heavy metal ions and heat shock.
1999
In the present study, we compared the induction of heat shock proteins (HSPs) by heat and heavy metal ions in three different endothelial cell types, namely, human umbilical vein endothelial cells, human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells, and the cell line EA.hy 926. Our results show that especially Zn2+and Cd2+are inducers of 70-kDa (HSP70), 60-kDa (HSP60), 32-kDa (HSP32), and 27-kDa (HSP27) HSPs. The strength of inducibility is specific for each HSP. Ni2+and Co2+only show an inducible effect at very high concentrations, that is, in the clearly cytotoxic range. Furthermore, we investigated the time course of HSP expression and the involvement of heat shock factor-1. Our study demon…
Importance of ligand speciation in environmental research:A case study
2001
The speciations of EDTA and DTPA in process, waste and river waters are modelled and simulated, specifically to the mode of occurrence in the pulp and paper mill effluents and subsequently in receiving waters. Due to relatively short residence times in bleaching process and waste water treatment and slow exchange kinetics, it is expected that the thermodynamic equilibrium is not necessarily reached. Therefore, the initial speciation plays a key role. As such, the simulations have been extended to the process waters of the pulp and paper industry taking into account estimated average conditions. The results reveal that the main species are; Mn and Ca complexes of EDTA and DTPA in pulp mill p…
Metamagnetism in hydrophobically induced carboxylate (phenylmalonate)-bridged copper(II) layers
2006
Self-assembly of copper(II) ions, phenylmalonate and pyrimidine yields the layered compound [Cu(pym)(Phmal)]n ( 1) where intralayer ferro- and interlayer antiferromagnetic interactions occur with three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering at Tc = 2.15 K Lloret Pastor, Francisco, Francisco.Lloret@uv.es ; Julve Olcina, Miguel, Miguel.Julve@uv.es
