Effect of High Temperature Oxidation Process on Corrosion Resistance of Bright Annealed Ferritic Stainless Steel
2017
The corrosion resistance of stainless steels is determined by the thickness, structure, composition and electronic properties of the oxide layers grown on their surface and isolating the metallic substrate from the environment. In the present work, ex situ XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) and ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ions Mass Spectrometry) have been combined to in situ PCS (PhotoCurrent Spectroscopy) in order to perform an integrated physicochemical characterization of surface oxide films grown on bright annealed ferritic stainless steel (AISI 434) as-received and after thermal post-treatment in air. The surface oxide film on as-received samples has a bilayer structure with…
Effects of Pulse Current Mode on Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation of 7075 Al in KMnO4Containing Solution
2017
Plasma electrolytic oxidation of 7075 Al alloy was performed in alkaline silicate electrolyte containing KMnO4as an additive using unipolar (U) and bipolar pulsed current modes (B1 and B2). The coating grown using the bipolar current with longer cathodic pulse time (B2) revealed a more dense foam-like surface morphology with fewer volcano areas providing higher thickness, which is mainly raised by reduction in discharge intensity. Also, a lower concentration of electrolyte elements (Si and Mn) was incorporated into the coating providing a brighter appearance. EIS results showed very high inner layer resistances for the coatings indicating this layer controls the overall corrosion performanc…
Metallic interconnects for SOFC : characterization of their corrosion resistance in hydrogen/water atmosphere and at the operating temperatures of di…
2006
International audience; Chromia forming alloys are one of the best candidates for the interconnecting materials in solid oxide fuels cells (SOFC). Recent research has enabled to decrease the operating temperature of the SOFC from 1000 °C to 800 °C. However, low electronic conductivity and high volatility of the chromia scale need to be solved to improve performance of interconnects. In the field of high temperature oxidation of metals, it is well known that the addition of reactive elements into alloys or in thin film coatings, improve the oxidation resistance of alloys at high temperature. The elements of the beginning of the lanthanide group and yttrium are the most efficient. The goal of…
Static strength and fatigue life of optimized hybrid single lap aluminum–CFRP structural joints
2017
Hybrid bolted/bonded joints are used to assemble structural components, commonly made by carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), with aluminum frames. Hence, they have become common solutions in a number of modern structural applications in the industrial fields, as well as civil constructions. Unfortunately, due to the lack of understanding of the relationships between the multiple parameters of influence that characterize their mechanical performance, only limited improvement have been achieved so far over classical bonding approaches, in terms of static and fatigue strength. As a result, further studies are needed in order to better exploit the potential of hybrid bolted/bonded joints a…
1,2,4-Triazolium ions as flexible scaffolds for the construction of polyphilic ionic liquid crystals
2018
A novel scaffold for the construction of self-organised ionic liquids and ionic liquid crystals bearing both perfluorocarbon and hydrocarbon moieties has been developed. The phase behaviour and physical properties of these materials can be tuned as a function of chain length and fluorine content and significant structural elaboration is possible, giving a highly flexible system.
The corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of PEO composite coatings containing α-Al2O3 particles on 7075 Al alloy
2018
Abstract Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of 7075 Al alloy was carried out in silicate base electrolyte containing 200 nm diameter α-Al2O3 particles for producing composite coatings. The process was performed under a soft-sparking regime using a pulsed bipolar signal with several concentrations of α-Al2O3 particles. It was found that the incorporation of α-Al2O3 particles into the coating did not significantly alter the thickness and roughness of the coating. However, the α-Al2O3 particles were detected on surface of the composite coatings. Corrosion tests showed significant improvement in corrosion performance of the composite coatings due to the efficient pore blocking provided by α-Al…
Amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) depositions on polyoxymethylene: Substrate influence on the characteristics of the developing coatings
2016
Abstract After oxygen plasma treatment polyoxymethylene (POM) material was exposed to acetylene plasma to progressively deposit two different types of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films. Radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) was used to generate both plasma processes. The surface morphology of the coated samples has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and their chemical composition by Diffusive Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) and Raman spectroscopy. Results revealed the absence of a solid interlayer formation between the a-C:H films and POM. The in sequence exposure of oxygen and acetylene plasma on POM substrate prevents…
A step forward in disclosing the secret of stradivari's varnish by NMR spectroscopy
2017
It is commonly thought that the varnishes used by the great violin-maker Antonio Stradivari may have a role in determining not only the esthetical features but also the acoustic properties of his instruments, and the idea of a “lost secret” is still widespread among musicians and violin-makers. Previous scientific researches on varnish samples of Stradivari's instruments revealed that they were generally made by a mix of linseed oil with and colophony or metal rosinates in different ratios ranging between 75/25 (oil/resin) and 60/40 (oil/rosinate). However, it is still not clear whether the mixture composition can be related to any structural and/or functional feature of the resulting varni…
Tuning the photocatalytic activity of bismuth wolframate: Towards selective oxidations for the biorefinery driven by solar-light
2017
The sol–gel entrapment of nanostructured Bi2WO6 enhances the activity and the selectivity of the short-gap semiconductor in the sunlight-driven photo-oxidation of trans-ferulic and trans-cinnamic acid dissolved in water with air as the primary oxidant. Valuable products such as vanillin, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid and vanillic acid are obtained. This provides the proof of concept that photocatalysis could be a promising technology in tomorrow's solar biorefineries.
Thiophene pyrenyl derivatives for the supramolecular processability of single-walled carbon nanotubes in thin film heterojunction
2017
Abstract A major problem for the use of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in electronic devices relates to their poor processability. Chemical modification inevitably introduces defects in the nanotube lattice, resulting in a loss of electronic properties. In this contest, we report on a supramolecular approach with the aim of increasing the dispersion of SWCNTs in solution and in organic semiconductor matrices by ensuring the optoelectronic properties. In particular, new pyrenyl derivatives of thiophene have been synthesized and used to improve the solubility of SWCNTs for electron transfer in thin film heterojunction with poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as donor system. Photoinduced ele…
