Abstract The first step in ecdysteroidogenesis, i.e. the 7,8-dehydrogenation of dietary cholesterol (C) to 7-dehydrocholesterol (7dC), is blocked in Drosophila melanogaster homozygous woc (without children) third instar larval ring glands (source of ecdysone). Unlike ring glands from wild-type D. melanogaster larvae, glands from woc mutants cannot convert radiolabelled C or 25-hydroxycholesterol (25C) to 7dC or 7-dehydro-25-hydroxycholesterol (7d25C) in vitro, nor to ecdysone (E). The onset of metamorphosis in Tenebrio molitor larvae (Insecta, Coleoptera) under grouped, isolated and starved conditions

Abstract The post-embryonic development of the beetle Tenebrio molitor presents a variable number of larval instars. Several parameters (instar length, time of apolysis and cuticle deposition) were compared during the larval-larval and larval-pupal cycles of mealworms over 50 mg, reared in grouped or isolated conditions. In grouped conditions comparable to mass breeding, larval-larval and larval-pupal apolyses were found to occur at the same time, but instar duration was longer in the case of prepupae. Ecdysteroid titres in a tenebrionid beetle, Zophobas atratus: effects of grouping and isolation.

Metamorphosis in Zophobas atratus is dependent on isolation: when kept in grouped conditions, larvae undergo numerous supernumerary moults, growing in size, without pupating. This beetle thus represents an interesting model for the analysis of possible differences in the endocrine regulation of normal vs. supernumerary larval moults. In this study, the ecdysteroid titres have been analysed in this species, using enzyme immunoassay. The hormonal variations of larvae undergoing normal or supernumerary larval cycles were particularly examined, in either grouped or isolated conditions. First Record of the Genus Acanthixalus Laurent, 1944 from the Upper Guinean Rain Forest, West Africa, with the Description of a New Species

Abstract We describe a new species of Acanthixalus from southwestern Ivory Coast. Acanthixalus sonjae sp. nov. differs from the Central African Acanthixalus spinosus genetically by 4.6 % in the investigated 16S rRNA. Morphologically adult frogs are very similar to A. spinosus. Male A. sonjae have wider heads and probably smaller gular glands than A. spinosus. Tadpoles of A. sonjae differ by much longer tails. Acanthixalus sonjae males are apparently mute. The new species is semiaquatic and lives in large water-filled cavities of trees in secondary and primary rain forest. Tadpoles complete metamorphosis in three months. They are at least partly carnivorous.

We have isolated and characterized a cDNA encoding a major cuticle protein in Tenebrio molitor, named ACP-20. The deduced amino acid sequence is roughly tripartite, with two terminal glycine-rich domains and a central region showing pronounced similarities with some other hard cuticle proteins. A novel wingless gene was isolated from the marine colonial hydroid Hydractinia echinata. Alignments and Bayesian inference analysis clearly assign the gene to the Wnt5A group. In line with data found for the brachyury ortholog of Hydractinia, He-wnt5A is expressed during metamorphosis in the posterior tip of the spindle-shaped planula larva, suggesting that the tip functions as a putative organizer during metamorphosis. Additionally, the outermost cells of the posterior tip are omitted from apoptosis during metamorphosis. Identification of the essential protein domains for Mib2 function during the development of the Drosophila larval musculature and adult flight muscles

The proper differentiation and maintenance of myofibers is fundamental to a functional musculature. Disruption of numerous mostly structural factors leads to perturbations of these processes. Among the limited number of known regulatory factors for these processes is Mind bomb2 (Mib2), a muscle-associated E3 ubiquitin ligase, which was previously established to be required for maintaining the integrity of larval muscles. Rethinking metamorphosis as rebirth of the Self opens the possibility of conceiving the subjectivity according to its plasticity, as the new perspectives of the morphological and morphogenetic investigations suggest. The ontological trait of the plasticity of the subject shows us that the Self is a continuous metamorphic activity, which is properly an activity of individualization of the identity of the Self. Following its natural metamorphic way of being and searching for its identity, the Self is revealed to be a transindividual form of life, constituting in the relationship with other transindividual forms of life and their counter-intentionality.

AbstractInfection of Salamandra salamandra larvae (Amphibia: Urodela) with the fish acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis was detected in a fish-free mountain brook. Gammarus fossarum was found to be the intermediate host. The parasites were probably inadvertently introduced through fish breeding practices. Evidence was obtained that Pomphorhynchus laevis persists, at least for several months, in postmetamorphic fire salamanders.
