Narrating the Unspeakable The Use of Metaphor between Hayden White and Hannah Arendt
2023
The paper addresses the question of the use of metaphors and analogies for events such as the Holocaust in the context of the discourse on the reduction of historiography to its narrative or rhetorical dimension and reflects on the philosophical implications of this reduction with respect to the question of post-truth. The critical debate resulting from the rhetorical or linguistic turn brings out within historical research a tension between narrative and documentation that, to the risk of making the boundary between history and the novel implied by the centrality of the role of narrative increasingly evanescent, counterpoints an appeal to the status of evidence, invoked by some historians,…

Are We at War? Some Remarks on War-Related Language on Covid-19
2022
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, public discourse has been characterized by a massive use of war metaphors. At the same time, this use has been harshly attacked as inappropriate and potentially dangerous. The article proposes a reflection on this debate by questioning the demonization of the war metaphor. Indeed, the appropriateness and the efficacy of a metaphor are not absolute values but depend on many factors such as context, audience and communicative purposes. Therefore, instead of attacking war metaphors it would be more useful to enrich the range of expressions to talk about the pandemic. What is really important is to never forget that expressive choices are never only…
Il triangolo non l'avevo considerato. Metafora, immagini mentali proposizioni tra Relevance Theory e Perceptual Symbol Theory.
2020
In this paper we will show the need for a multimodal approach to the study of metaphorical utterances. We will discuss this hypothesis showing potentials and limits of the metaphor studies conducted within Relevance Theory, which has represented the most authoritative and radical theoretical framework based on the propositional character of metaphorical utterances. In particular, we will focus on the last papers by Carston (2010, 2018), in which it is recognized that the comprehension of complex and poetic metaphors could involve the activation of mental images. We will discuss the problem that the notion of mental imagery poses to Relevance Theory and we will try to overcome these problems…
Metaphor and Brain: A Neuropragmatic Overview
2010
This article offers an overview of the different types of metaphor and cognitive abilities that are required in metaphor comprehension. It does so in connection with the general psycholinguistic and prag- matic theories of metaphor, which are examined briefly. Attention is then turned to neuropragmatic functions and the brain in terms of anatomic structure and functioning. Finally, the article suggests some relevant areas for future research.
Loopholes in the Echo Chambers: How the Echo Chamber Metaphor Oversimplifies the Effects of Information Gateways on Opinion Expression
2021
Social media (SM) are often regarded drivers of personalized echo chambers in which only ideas resonante that individuals already hold, leading to more extreme opinions and intensified opinion expression. However, recent theorizing and evidence has cast doubts on the universal applicability of the echo chamber metaphor, pointing out that communication effects on opinion expression are much more complex than the metaphor suggests. Using the refugee crisis in Germany as a background, the current study challenges four implicit premises of the echo chamber metaphor empirically. The findings show a more complex picture than the metaphor implies: (1) Ignoring other information sources beyond SM m…
Design, Implementation and Students' Emotional Assessment of a Software for the Learning of Rational Numbers through Music Metaphors in Chilean Prima…
2019
Using sound and music as a metaphor to approach curricular mathematical contents in Primary Education seems an interesting field that deserves some research. Both music and sound can synergically act as scaffolding for learning, intervening as part of situated knowledge, and they could offer a new perspective for learning mathematics at schools, giving pupils opportunities to develop their own mental representations. Also, the incorporation of an affective/emotional analysis, as criteria for evaluation, seems pertinent and complementary to other criteria in the production of multimedia material with educational purposes both in formal and non-formal domains of education. These are the inten…
"La ocasión": una novela en el eje de la vacilación
2014
This paper aims to analyze Juan Jose Saer’s narrative strategy in the novel "La ocasion". The author takes over some of the characters belonging to Argentinian collective imagination –who are national mythts–, what allows him to show the pampas as a misty and insurmountable mythical place. The especial mapping of plain he draws is not only a geographic framework in which the landowner, the gaucho or immigrant face both the environment and the otherness. This may be understood as a metaphor of man’s general condition. From a Lacanian orientation, the second part of this article examines the configuration of the main character from its central theme: spirit-matter dichotomy.
Prospective mathematics teachers’ self-referential metaphors as indicators of the emerging professional identity
2019
Ideals play a key role in a student teachers’ identity work. They form targets to strive for and a mirror for reflection. In this paper, we examine Finnish mathematics student teachers’ metaphors for the teacher’s role (N= 188). We classified the metaphors according to a model that identified teachers as subject matter experts, didactical experts, and pedagogical experts, with the addition of another two categories, self-referential and contextual. For the exploration of emerging professional identities, we studied the self-referential metaphors, which formed the most common category in the data. We observed that every third metaphor described either student teachers’ personalities or their…
Miradas letradas, letras ad-miradas. Una conversación con el mundo social
2019
