Tragedia griega: una metáfora de debate público y participación democrática

2019

Athenian citizens deliberate in the assembly, but the theatre also becomes a place for public debate. In addition to being a consequence of economic or cultural aspects, democracy is a consequence of the development of a democratic imaginary. Located in that imaginary, Greek tragedies, regarded as «democratic myths», work to reaffirm Athenian democracy. Far from being dogmatic, the tragic myth explores the contradictions of social and personal life and implicitly or explicitly seeks their correction. This dramatic genre encourages participation from the spectator (citizen) that greatly exceeds the schematic reduction in Aristotelian theory of catharsis. Greek tragedy proposes the existence …

Obras de ficción, formas de conciencia y literatura

2017

Images of the health emergency in contemporary poetry

2021

Pictures portraying the health emergency around the world, such as those of the potter’s field in Hart Island, of the field hospitals in New York or of the column of military trucks transporting the coffins of COVID-19 victims in Bergamo, had worldwide resonance. This research investigates their metaphorical value in two recent poems: Plaguey Hill by Paul Muldoon and Requiem per una casa di riposo lombarda (Requiem for a Lombard Rest Home) by Fabio Pusterla. The preliminary aim is a complete analysis of the two poems. Thereafter, I will focus on the metaphorical function of the aforementioned pictures. In Muldoon, they convey a new sense of community, and also work on a meta literary level,…

Nación, emoción y fantasía. La España melodramática de Ayguals de Izco = Nation, Emotion and Fantasy. Ayguals de Izco's Melodramatic Spain

2017

Superheroes, Social Responsibility, and the Metaphor of Gods in Mark Waid and Alex Ross’s Kingdom Come

2015

Some decades ago, Umberto Eco, in » The Myth of Superman, « pointed out the paradoxical nature of the all-powerful superhero. » Superman, « Eco notes, » is practically omnipotent; « consequently » one could expect the most bewildering political, economic, and technological upheavals in the world « from Superman – or any other › practically ‹ omnipotent superhero. But no such transformations occur in the narratives.

Puppeteering as a metaphor for unpacking power in participatory action research on climate change and health

2021

The health impacts of climate change are distributed inequitably, with marginalized communities typically facing the direst consequences. However, the concerns of the marginalized remain comparatively invisible in research, policy and practice. Participatory action research (PAR) has the potential to centre these concerns, but due to unequal power relations among research participants, the approaches often fall short of their emancipatory ideals. To unpack how power influences the dynamics of representation in PAR, this paper presents an analytical framework using the metaphor of ‘puppeteering’. Puppeteering is a metaphor for how a researcher-activist resonates and catalyses both the voices…

Cosa “significa” una metafora? Davidson e le Teorie Neodavidsoniane sulla metafora

2022

In this paper I will discuss Davidson's theory of metaphor and the neodavidsonian theories of metaphor. I will show points of force and points of weakness of this kind of account of metaphor and I will propose a synthetic perspective on metaphor that brings together "imagistic theories of metaphor" with "cognitive theories of metaphor".

The conceptualisation of austerity in the Portuguese, Spanish and Irish press

2017

The aim of this chapter is to analyse the conceptualisation of austerity in three different European cultures by identifying metaphorical expressions used in one representative newspaper of the Portuguese, the Spanish and the Irish press between 2011 and 2012. The metaphors were identified by searching for three keywords from the field of economy and politics (austeridade-austeridad-austerity, corte-recorte-cut and divida-deuda-debt) and were then classified according to the type of schema they instantiate, namely, propositional schema, image schema or event schema. Assuming the general framework of Cultural Linguistics and corpus-based and discourse-based approaches to conceptual metaphor,…

On temporal deixis and cognitive models in early Indo-European

2013

Crosslinguistic evidence suggest that there are two different (often coexistent) basic cognitive models for time, on the basis of which the world’s languages express time in terms of conceptual metaphor from the source spatial domain to the target temporal domain: i) the Time-based (Time-Reference-Point) model, in which time is conceptualized in terms of sequentially arrayed objects moving in space, so that a temporal event is relative to another earlier or later temporal event; ii) the Ego-based (Ego-Reference-Point) model, which is considered to have a more complex structure in which times are conceptualized as objects relative to a canonical deictic observer (Ego) located at the hic et n…
