Women’s Careers in Management : Confronted Problems and Approved Practices
2022
Gender equality has not been achieved anywhere in the world. One persistent, global challenge is that women struggle to advance to management positions in the workplace. This chapter focuses on the area of management as it relates to women’s careers. Well-known metaphors that highlight the complexity of the problems women face in their careers are presented. Additionally, two examples of practices that can be helpful to the advancement of women’s careers, namely, all-women management development programmes and work-family arrangements are discussed. It is concluded that although there has been progress around women’s moving in managerial roles in many places over the years, much still needs…
Postmodernisma īpašības un stāstījuma līdzekļi Kazuo Išiguro romānā un filmā "Dienas pārpalikums"
2022
2021
This paper presents the results of a double computer-assisted analysis of selected Ansa news agency texts during the domestic quarantine period (lockdown: 10 March 2020 - May 18 2020). More specifically, the research focuses on lexicon, concepts and interpretative sequences in the construction of three media metaphors: 1) “war-like and post-apocalyptic” (CBPA); 2) “segregationist and normative” (SN), 3) “reactive and participatory” (RP). Some aspects of the new social and family relations in the Covid Age thus emerge - also on the basis of the concept of ‘interactional anomie’.

The use of the French adjective “malsain” (usually translated in English as “unhealthy,” “unwholesome” or “sick”) to judge a work of art has led me to question the relevance of this metaphor, the way this value is determined, the reasons which lead the subject to consume shocking material and the possibility to distinguish art from mere symptom. I consider the unhealthy, on the one hand, as a relation of transmission which produces an aesthetic based on metaphor and metonymy, and on the other, as a subjective value delivered by a self or a law, and I argue that, as it is entirely discursive, the unhealthy is in effect an uncanny metonymy. I show that the works under study represent and cond…
Games as Blends : Understanding Hybrid Games
2017
The meaning of what hybrid games are is often fixed to the context in which the term is used. For example, hybrid games have often been defined in relation to recent developments in technology. This creates issues in the terms usage and limitations in thinking. This paper argues that hybrid games should be understood through conceptual metaphors. Hybridity is the blending of different cognitive domains that are not usually associated together. Hybrid games usually blend domains related to games, for example digital and board games, but can blend also other domains. Through viewing game experiences as blends from different domains, designers can understand the inherent hybridity in various t…
"Yes we can" or "Make America great again" : comparison of representations in Barack Obama and Donald Trump's inaugural addresses
2017
Koska poliitikoilla on näkyvä rooli yhteiskunnassa, on tärkeää tutkia, millaisia asenteita, ideologioita ja arvoja he levittävät puheidensa välityksellä. Tätä teemaa voidaan tarkastella hyödyntäen kriittistä diskurssianalyysia, jonka avulla usein tarkastellaan eriarvoisuutta ja vallan väärinkäyttöä. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millaisia representaatioita Barack Obama ja Donald Trump loivat eri ihmisryhmistä virkaanastujaispuheiss…
Political Discourse as Culture and Ideology
2009
This book explores the way in which pronominal relations and rhetorical strategies in political discourse determine the relationship speaker/audience, thus conditioning both the discourse organizational structures and the development of ideological content. The texts themselves are analysed from three different points of view: (i) in terms of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA); (ii) in terms of rhetorical analysis; (iii) in terms of ideological content. More specifically, the intergration of rhetorical analysis into Critical Discourse Analysis is relevant and allows us to understand the realationship between linguistic structures on the one hand, and how these structures are designed to infl…
Reading figurative images in the political discourse of the British Press
2017
The present work aims to study visual metaphors and multimodal metaphors in the political cartoons published in the British press during the Brexit campaign. The theoretical approach adopted draws upon the theories elaborated by Halliday (), Forceville (; ), Ruiz de Mendoza and Diez (), and Hart (), with the objective of identifying the three analytical steps that lead to the conceptual frames structuring the political event under investigation. Results show the extent to which the visual representation of the Brexit campaign proposes novel and original perspectives of interpretation, and further evidence of the relevance of metaphors and metonymies in the narration of e…
