MODELLI, TESTI, PROCESSI: UNO STUDIO COGNITIVO DELLE METAFORE DELESSICALIZZATE E D’INVENZIONE
2014

Evolution of metaphors: Phylogeny of oil slick cartoons in Spanish press
2014
The main purpose of this article is to analyze the evolution of a metaphor set over time. By studying cartoons about the oil slick caused by the Prestige oil tanker in 2002 on Spanish shores and the subsequent court decision in 2013, we observe a progressive metaphor diversification and evolution, with the oil slick as an old common trait. Additionally, using basic cladistical methods, we propose a phylogenetic tree for the metaphor set, from a common ancestor to the subsequent diversification regarding news content. These results show that phylogenetic models can be very helpful in understanding the evolution of conceptual metaphors, and this method of analysis could even be a methodologi…

De M. Bergeret a D. Toni de Bearn: Llorenç Villalonga, ironista
2012
This paper is devoted to stud…
Coercive metaphors in news headlines :a cognitive-pragmatic approach
2014
This article explores the application of metaphors in news headlines with a view to interrogating their potential for coercion. Coercion in news discourse is understood as a strategic deployment of pragma-linguistic devices, including metaphors, to foreground the representations of socio-political reality that are compatible with the interests of the news outlet rather than those that inform public debate. It is argued that coercion can be exposed through systematic discourse analysis. Methodologically, the study aims to integrate the cognitive and pragmatic approaches to metaphor in regarding it as both a conceptual building block of news representations and a strategic framing device in n…
Visualization of Jacques Lacan’s Registers of the Psychoanalytic Field, and Discovery of Metaphor and of Metonymy. Analytical Case Study of Edgar All…
2017
International audience; We start with a description of Lacan’s work that we then take into our analytics methodology. In a first investigation, a Lacan-motivated template of the Poe story is fitted to the data. A segmentation of the storyline is used in order to map out the diachrony. Based on this, it will be shown how synchronous aspects, potentially related to Lacanian registers, can be sought. This demonstrates the effectiveness of an approach based on a model template of the storyline narrative. In a second and more comprehensive investigation, we develop an approach for revealing, that is, uncovering, Lacanian register relationships. Objectives of this work include the wide and genera…
The birth of language ecology: interdisciplinary influences in Einar Haugen's “The ecology of language”
2015
Abstract Einar Haugen is generally regarded as the founding father of ‘language ecology’ or ‘ecology of language’. In his classic 1971 paper, he suggested that “[l]anguage ecology may be defined as the study of interactions between any given language and its environment”. After tracing the roots of language ecology in the social sciences and biology and the use of similar locutions by other linguists before him, the present paper discusses major conceptual and theoretical issues surrounding his proposal. Fundamental discrepancies between how the concept of ecology is understood in biology and sociology, on the one hand, and the attempted application to language, on the other, render details…
The Feminine Monster. The Uncanny and the Construction of Motherness in Furtivos
2018
The maternal figure embodies one of the most recurrent metaphors in Spanish cinema of late-Francoism and transi-tion, a metaphor that has been read as a device of social criticism towards the dictatorship. Largely due to the sym-bolic connotations that the Franco regime had projected on motherhood, it has been connected with the dictatorial past, functioning on the screen as a monstrous and uncanny personification of the Francoist repressive apparatus. Thus the maternal has become a privileged space for the deployment of film narratives that explore how power rela-tions within the family can be portrayed as a symbol of the relationship between the subject and the State. This arti-cle deals …
The race to educational reform in the USA: the race to the top
2011
From the cognitive perspective of embodiment and relying mostly on the powerful and revealing tool of metaphor, we approach the issue of education in the Obama administration's discourse trying to unveil the ideological preferences hidden behind the use of the different metaphors. It is assumed that this body of metaphors will contribute to the political and cultural understanding of such strategic issue to a nation. The analysis of speeches on education by leading figures plus the media reflection of educational problems (Washington Post) will let us see from a close distance how education is talked about. After the analysis of the four metaphors, it will be seen that traditional values su…
