¿Tiene arraigo en el cerebro la libertad?

2017

Criticism of Metaphysics and Constitution of the Subject: Materialist Effects on the Philosophy of Helvétius and d'Holbach

2014

The series of books, marginalia, refutations, provoked by De l'esprit (1758) and De l'homme (1773) often plays a strategic role in the understanding of the Enlightenment. This paper focuses on what really happened when Rousseau did read and commented on Helvétius, which he made twice. Rousseau comments on the theory of judgment from the account of the experience of the sensitive and judging being. The question of matter and its properties will then no longer appear as the key to Rousseau's first reaction to Helvétius' work. Then we will see what closeness between the two philosophies need to be cleared. It will appear that Rousseau did not interpret (or rather misinterpret) Helvétius as the…

Simulating Machines: Modelling, Metaphysics and the Mechanosphere

2020

This article explores some of the ways in which the conceptual apparatus of A Thousand Plateaus, and especially its machinic metaphysics, can be connected to recent developments in computer modelling and social simulation, which provide new tools for thinking that are becoming increasingly popular among philosophers and social scientists. Conversely, the successful deployment of these tools provides warrant for the flat ontology articulated in A Thousand Plateaus and therefore contributes to the ‘reversal of Platonism’ for which Deleuze had called in his earlier works, such as Logic of Sense. The first major section offers a brief exposition of some key concepts in A Thousand Plateaus in or…

Kants Konzeption kosmologischer Freiheit – ein metaphysischer Rest?

2017

What Is an Individual?

2021

The first nine sections discuss at length the notion of individual, concluding it is not an ontological, but a linguistic one. The last three draw some very general conclusions that may well be called “metaphysical”.

The Apodicticity of Absence

1995

Husserl criticizes traditional metaphysics. Nevertheless, for Derrida, ‘metaphysics’ finest hour is represented by Husserl—The ‘return to the things themselves’ is precisely this ultimate effacement of metaphysics in the act of its predominance. The ‘principle of principles,’ that which guarantees the truth of the things themselves is an essential metaphysical one: the presence of presence to itself.”1 Derrida himself says: “The ultimate form of ideality, the ideality of ideality,... is the living present, the self-presence of transcendental life. Presence has always been and will always, forever, be the form in which, we can say apodictically, the infinite diversity of contents is produced…
