Versican and Tumor-Associated Macrophages Promotes Tumor Progression and Metastasis in Canine and Murine Models of Breast Carcinoma
2019
Versican and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are involved in growth and metastases in several cancers. Here, we investigated the potential role of versican, a matrix proteoglycan, and its correlation with TAMs infiltrates in different stages of two different breast cancer models: spontaneous canine mammary gland carcinomas and the murine 4T1 breast cancer model. The stromal versican expression was correlated with TAMs accumulation in tumors with an advanced stage from spontaneous canine mammary carcinoma samples. Versican expression in mice, identified in late stages of tumor progression, was associated to a high number of peri-tumoral infiltrating TAMs. Indeed, TAMs were related to a p…
Investigación en la escuela
2011
Use of Eribulin mesylate as second-line therapy in elderly patients with HER/2 negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC): Efficacy, tolerability and Qu…
2020
OBJECTIVE: Eribulin mesylate (Halaven®) is a non-taxane inhibitor of microtubule indicated as monotherapy in patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), which progresses after anthracycline and taxanes therapy. In this retrospective observational study, we want to evaluate the efficacy of Eribulin in elderly women with MBC pretreated with anthracyclines and taxanes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 40 elderly patients > 70 years of age were enrolled, and the median age was 76 years (range 70-82). Overall survival (OS), Progression Free Survival (PFS), Objective Response Rate (ORR) were primary endpoints, tolerability, carcinoembryonic antigen levels 15.3 (Ca 15.3), before and after treatment, and…
Cluster simulations of structural transformations in yellow arsenic
2001
Abstract Yellow arsenic (y-As) consists of tetrahedral As4 molecules that may be packed in some amorphous and crystalline structures. Like many other arsenic structures, y-As is metastable and undergoes irreversible transitions (polymerization) under irradiation. The process of y-As polymerization, which is observed experimentally, usually leads to the formation of amorphous arsenic (a-As) possessing a continuous random network structure. Our previous quantum chemical simulation for an eight-atom cluster model performed using semi-empirical CNDO/BW approach, combined with optimization technique of cyclic coordinate descent, have shown a formation of molecular dimers due to breaking of one b…
Uncovering the metastable γ-Ag2WO4 phase: a joint experimental and theoretical study
2017
The synthesis of metastable solid phases is a pivotal starting point for innovative materials research. Here, we report the synthesis by means of a precipitation method of the metastable cubic γ-Ag2WO4 phase under ambient conditions. Different experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld refinement, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), micro-Raman/ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance, photoluminescence spectroscopies, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were employed. To complement the experimental data, the geometry, morphology, vibrational and electronic structure of γ-Ag2WO4 were characterized and evaluated using first-princip…
E-selectin modulates the malignant properties of T84 colon carcinoma cells.
2002
The extravasation of metastatic cells is regulated by molecular events involving the initial adhesion of tumor cells to the endothelium and subsequently the migration of cells in the host connective tissue. E-selectin on endothelial cells and sialyl Lewis X carbohydrate component on tumor cells are mainly involved in the adhesion of colon carcinoma cells to the endothelium of target organ. Interaction of T84 colon cancer cells to purified E-selectin in vitro caused an increase in the tyrosine phosphorylation of a number of proteins as well as the modulation of cellular properties correlated to the metastatic phenotype. Specifically, E-selectin-stimulated actin reorganization, increased coll…
Hold design supports learning and transfer of climbing fluency
2014
Being a discipline with a broad range of genres, rock climbing is an activity where participants seek to generalize the skills they learn in different performance contexts. A training strategy for achieving skill transfer was explored in a group of experienced climbers. Specifically, we tested the effect of practising on three routes, each of the same difficulty, but where handholds supported opportunities for using either a single technical action or multiple actions. Transfer of climbing fluidity in terms of the geometric index of entropy (GIE) of the hip trajectory was then assessed. We expected that learning would be induced on the route where multiple actions were usable. Results revea…
A case of squamocellular uterine cervix carcinoma metastatic to the skin with enterocutaneous fistula.
2006
Metastases to the skin complicated by enterocutaneous fistula are a rare event in gynecological malignancies. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with uterine cervix carcinoma metastatic to the skin and treated with surgery and radiotherapy. The last relapse to the skin was complicated by the formation of an enterocutaneous fistula. This low-output fistula was treated with surgery and adequate supportive care. The treatment of enterocutaneous fistulas may be either invasive (surgical resection, surgical repair with corrective procedures or with myocutaneous flaps, colonic and/or urinary diversion, endoscopic treatments with metallic stents) or conservative (skin care and local disin…

The Binomial “Inflammation-Epigenetics” in Breast Cancer Progression and Bone Metastasis: IL-1β Actions Are Influenced by TET Inhibitor in MCF-7 Cell…
2022
The existence of a tight relationship between inflammation and epigenetics that in primary breast tumor cells can lead to tumor progression and the formation of bone metastases was investigated. It was highlighted how the induction of tumor progression and bone metastasis by Interleukin-1 beta, in a non-metastatic breast cancer cell line, MCF-7, was dependent on the de-methylating actions of ten-eleven translocation proteins (TETs). In fact, the inhibition of their activity by the Bobcat339 molecule, an inhibitor of TET enzymes, determined on the one hand, the modulation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition process, and on the other hand, the reduction in the expression of markers of bo…
