Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in primary cervical cancer and in cancer free pelvic lymph nodes--correlation with clinico-pathological parameters and…

2001

OBJECTIVE To assess whether the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA and/or several genotypes of HPV DNA in primary cervical cancer and cancer free pelvic lymph nodes are correlated with several clinicopathological parameters of well-defined prognostic significance and whether virological parameters are predictors of long-term survival in cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS 223 cases of cervical cancer patients included in this retrospective study underwent follow-up evaluation. Survival and cause of death were examined for 204 (91.4%) patients, with a mean follow-up time of 4.4 years. HPV DNA was detected using the high sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method followed by …

Is first-line single-agent mitoxantrone in the treatment of high-risk metastatic breast cancer patients as effective as combination chemotherapy? No …

2002

BACKGROUND: To determine whether patients with high-risk metastatic breast cancer draw benefit from combination chemotherapy as first-line treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 260 women with measurable metastatic breast cancer fulfilling high-risk criteria, previously untreated with chemotherapy for their metastatic disease, were randomized to receive either mitoxantrone 12 mg/m(2) or the combination of fluorouracil 500 mg/m(2), epirubicin 50 mg/m(2) and cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m(2) (FEC) every 3 weeks. Treatment was continued until complete remission plus two cycles, or until disease progression. In the case of partial remission or stable disease, treatment was stopped after 12 cycl…

Breast cancer subtypes can be determinant in the decision making process to avoid surgical axillary staging: A retrospective cohort study.

2015

Abstract Introduction The need for performing axillary lymph-node dissection in early breast cancer when the sentinel lymph node (SLN) is positive has been questioned in recent years. The purpose of this study was to identify a low-risk subgroup of early breast cancer patients in whom surgical axillary staging could be avoided, and to assess the probability of having a positive lymph-node (LN). Methods We evaluated the cohort of 612 consecutive women affected by early breast cancer. We considered age, tumor size, histological grade, vascular invasion, lymphatic invasion and cancer subtype (Luminal A, Luminal B HER-2+, Luminal B HER-2−, HER-2+, and Triple Negative) as variables for univariat…

Phase IB study of the EpCAM antibody adecatumumab combined with docetaxel in patients with epcampositive relapsed or refractory advanced-stage breast…

2012

Background: Targeted therapy options in HER2-negative breast cancer are limited. This open-label, multicenter phase IB dose-escalation trial was conducted to determine safety, tolerability, and antitumor activity of a combination of docetaxel (Taxotere) and increasing doses of adecatumumab, a human IgG1 antibody targeting epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), in EpCAM-positive relapsed or primary refractory advanced-stage breast cancer. Patients and methods: Patients pretreated with up to four prior chemotherapy regimens received increasing adecatumumab doses either every 3 weeks (q3w) or weekly (qw) combined with docetaxel (100 mg/m 2 q3w). Primary end points were safety and tolerabil…

Study of axillary lymph node asymmetry in a female population

2001

We analysed a large series of axillary lymph nodes, with and without metastases following radical mastectomy for breast cancer. We found left/right asymmetry in numbers of lymph nodes, and also asymmetry of lymph node dimensions, which could have been the caused by tumoral antigenic stimulation. The distribution of hyperplastic node patterns differed significantly.

An evaluation of the impact of technical bias on the concordance rate between primary and recurrent tumors in breast cancer.

2012

Abstract Purpose Whether or not to biopsy the metastasis in recurrent breast cancer has become mired in controversy. Several studies have shown an important discordance of the immunohistochemical (IHC) determinations for ER, PR and HER2 between primary (PT) and recurrent tumors (RT). Yet it remains unknown within this what impact technical issues have. The aim of our study was to assess whether technical variability might have an impact on the concordance between PT and RT. Methods IHC determinations in paired biopsies from PT and RT were compared under routine vs study conditions. In the former, pathological analysis reproduced the conditions used in the routine of a University Pathology D…

A prospective multicenter phase II study of oral and i.v. vinorelbine plus trastuzumab as first-line therapy in HER2-overexpressing metastatic breast…

2011

Abstract Background To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral and i.v. vinorelbine plus trastuzumab as first-line regimen in a patient-convenient application for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-overexpressing patients with metastatic breast cancer. Patients and methods Forty-two women were enrolled in a multicenter study. The patients received i.v. vinorelbine at a dose of 25 mg/m2 on day 1 followed by oral vinorelbine at a dose of 60 mg/m2 on days 8 and 15 in a 3-week cycle. Standard dose trastuzumab was given at 3-week intervals. Results Complete response was observed in 7 patients (18.9%) and partial response in 19 patients (51.4%), for an overall response rate of 70.3%…

Phase II study of weekly docetaxel in patients with recurrent or metastatic endometrial cancer: AGO Uterus-4.

2006

Abstract Objective The aim of this phase II multicenter study was to evaluate the safety, toxicity and efficacy of docetaxel administered weekly as first line chemotherapy in patients with recurrent or metastatic endometrial cancer. Patients and methods Thirty five patients with recurrent or metastatic endometrial cancer without previous chemotherapy were enrolled to receive three 6-week cycles of docetaxel 35 mg/m 2 /week with 2-week breaks between the cycles. Therapy response was evaluated after every 6-week cycle, and therapy was continued in case of at least stable disease. Final therapy response was evaluated after three 6-week cycles of docetaxel. Results Thirty five patients with a m…

Management of Patients with Node-positive Prostate Cancer at Radical Prostatectomy and Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection: A Systematic Review.

2020

Abstract Context Optimal management of prostate cancer (PCa) patients with lymph node invasion at radical prostatectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection still remains unclear. Objective To assess the effectiveness of postoperative treatment strategies for pathologically node-positive PCa patients. The secondary aim was to identify the most relevant prognostic factors to guide the management of pN1 patients. Evidence acquisition A systematic review was performed in January 2020 using Medline, Embase, and other databases. A total of 5063 articles were screened, and 26 studies including 12 537 men were selected for data synthesis and included in the current review according to the Preferred Re…

Sentinel node biopsy for malignant melanoma: a staging procedure only?

2010

Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is an established staging tool for malignant melanoma. It allows identification of patients with metastatic disease at a very early stage and to collect accurate and complete prognostic information for these patients. Having noted that in a relevant percentage of patients the sentinel node is the only site of metastases, some authors have postulated a therapeutic role for SNB. In this paper, the possibility of a therapeutic role of SNB is evaluated. Relevant literature on the topic has been analyzed. Several findings suggest that not all patients with a positive SNB have further lymph node involvement. The prognostic indicators currently available do not significa…
